By the decree of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan dated from May 1997, in connection with changes in administrative work, Aksuat district was dissolved (disbanded) and included in Tarbagatai district of East Kazakhstan region. The administrative center is in Aksuat settlement. The district is located to the south-east of East Kazakhstan region with an area of 23.700 km2. The population accounts for 38915 people. There are 17 rural districts in the district, totals 60 settlements. The climate of the district is sharply continental.
The territory of Tarbagatai district covers 2373190 ha. Including, agricultural - 1110182 ha, industrial - 23 760 ha, reserve land - 572 872 ha. The primary production of the district is agriculture, the main direction is cattle breeding.
The tourist potential in the district includes the Tarbagatai State Nature Reserve, the Yrgyzbai-ata Mausoleum, the Boritostagan Mountain. There is the Sengir recreation camp.
