Zhetysu district is an administrative-territorial unit of the city of Alma-Ata. It was founded in 1936 as Leninsky district. On December 12, 1995, it was renamed Zhetysu.
On July 1, 1998, the Law of the Republic of Kazakhstan "On the special status of the city of Almaty" was adopted. The law established the legal basis for the special status of the city of Almaty, based on its features as a scientific, cultural, historical, financial and industrial center, which were a guarantee of its further development, by establishing measures of financial, economic and social incentives, the special status of Almaty significantly expanded the powers of the Akimat and Maslikhat of the city.
As of January 1, 1998, the territory of Almaty was 23,300 hectares.
On October 2, 1998, according to the Decree of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan dated April 29, 1998, 445 hectares from the Ili district were included in the territory of the Zhetysu district.
As of January 1, 2000, the territory of Zhetysu district was 5,100 hectares, the permanent population was 141.4 thousand.
By a joint decision of the XXV session of the II convocation of the Almaty Maslikhat and Akim of Almaty on June 11, 2003, the settlements attached to the city limits were renamed into the following microdistricts of Zhetysu district:
* Karasu village in the "Karasu" microdistrict;
* the village is already in the "Ozhet" microdistrict;
* the village of Zarya Vostoka in the neighborhood "Zarya Vostoka";
* the village of Krasny Trudovik in the Trudovik microdistrict;
* the village of Kurylys in the microdistrict "Kurylysshi".
By the joint decision of the XI session of the Maslikhat of Almaty of the fourth convocation of July 2, 2008 No. 109 and the Akimat of Almaty of July 4, 2008 No. 3/490 and in connection with the formation of a new administrative Alatau district, a new border of the Zhetysu district was established.
By Decree of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan No. 798 dated April 16, 2014, the territory of Almaty region, Ili district, Pervomaika settlement was attached to Zhetysu district.
