Prevention of carbon monoxide poisoning
Carbon monoxide is a poisonous gas that has no smell and taste, which in turn makes it particularly dangerous. Inhaling carbon monoxide is dangerous because it leads to acute oxygen starvation, which can lead to death.
Causes of carbon monoxide formation Carbon monoxide is formed when carbon is burned under conditions of oxygen deficiency. Gorenje In practice, carbon monoxide is formed by the combustion of various types of fuels that do not burn completely - for example, gas, oil, coal and wood. In cities, carbon monoxide is mainly found in the exhaust gases from internal combustion engines, and is also formed during the combustion of household gas.
Causes of carbon monoxide poisoning:
- violation of the rules of operation of furnace heating (untimely closing of the furnace flap, insufficient access of fresh air to the fuel tank, poor traction).
- faulty operation of the furnace and chimney (cracks in the furnace structure, clogged chimney).
- finding a person in the hearth of a fire.
- gorenje household gas in conditions of lack of oxygen and poor ventilation;
Poisoning can be gradual or lightning-fast. It depends on the concentration of gas in the air, the duration of its exposure and the individual sensitivity of the person. The process of carbon monoxide poisoning can be described as follows: carbon monoxide actively binds to hemoglobin in human blood, forming carboxyhemoglobin, and blocks the transfer of oxygen to tissue cells, which leads to hypoxia. In other words, when inhaling carbon monoxide, its molecules "take" the place of oxygen in a person's blood, which can lead to his death.
Signs of poisoning:
First aid in case of poisoning:
- take out into the fresh air and put on your back horizontally;
- unbutton your clothes and open your chest;
- give hot sweet tea or coffee to drink–
- cool the face and chest (cold water, chilled cloth, ice or snow);
If the victim does not recover:
- in any way to cause irritation in the nose (pen, tobacco, mustard, pepper, ammonia) to make the victim sneeze;
- it is useful to rub the chest before breathing (with a mitten, scarf and other objects);
- perform artificial respiration;
- send the victim to a medical institution. Prevention of carbon monoxide poisoning If the safety rules are followed, carbon monoxide poisoning can be avoided:
- do not use fuel-burning devices without sufficient knowledge, skills and tools;
- check the serviceability of the furnace, chimney, supply and exhaust ventilation;
- do not burn fuel in a room with poor ventilation;
- do not leave a car in the garage with the engine running, and it is also forbidden to sleep in a car with the engine running;
- it is forbidden to use diesel and gasoline generators in enclosed spaces (basement).
In case of detection of signs indicating carbon monoxide poisoning, or simply its presence in the room, you need to contact the services by numbers 103 or 112.
