Peacekeeping operations

The experience of participation of Kazakhstani military personnel in maintaining peace on the planet dates back to the creation of the first Kazbat engineering and sapper detachment in August 2003.

In the classical sense, cooperation between the Government of Kazakhstan and the UN in the field of peacekeeping began in 2014 after the dispatch of the first serviceman of the Armed Forces as a military observer of the Organization in Western Sahara.

Since that time, Kazakh peacekeepers have served in various regions of the world, including Lebanon, Western Sahara and Côte d'Ivoire. In 2024, Kazakhstan additionally sent military personnel to UN missions in Africa and the Middle East. Missions in the Central African Republic, Mali and the Democratic Republic of the Congo have become particularly difficult.

Kazakhstan has become the first and so far the only country in the CIS to receive an independent UN mandate in the Golan Heights, where today 139 of our military personnel perform an important task of maintaining a ceasefire between the warring parties.

The Organization's decision to deploy a peacekeeping contingent on its own was the logical result of systematic work to develop the regulatory framework and improve the training of military personnel. A key role in this process was played by the establishment of the Peacekeeping Operations Center in Almaty, which provides comprehensive training, including legal, humanitarian, linguistic and psychological training for peacekeepers.

Kazakhstan's participation in UN peacekeeping missions not only makes a significant contribution to strengthening international security, but also contributes to enhancing our country's role in the global arena. It also allows Kazakhstani military personnel to gain valuable combat experience, improve their professional training and adapt to actions in a multinational environment.
