Diplomatic relations were established on February 11, 1992.
Germany opened its Embassy to Kazakhstan in Almaty in December 1992 and relocated it to Astana in 1999.
Kazakhstan opened its Embassy to Germany in Bonn in September 1993 and relocated it to Berlin in 1999.
Ambassador of Kazakhstan to Germany is Nurlan Onzhanov.
Ambassador of Germany to Kazakhstan is Monika Iwersen.
Political Cooperation
President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev visited Germany three times, including with official visits on December 5-6, 2019, and September 28, 2023, and to attend the Munich Security Conference on February 14-16, 2020, and the first meeting of the Heads of State of Central Asia and the Federal Chancellor of Germany on September 29, 2023.
President Nursultan Nazarbayev visited Germany eight times (1992, 1997, 2001, 2004, 2007, 2009, 2012, 2015)
Visits of German Federal Presidents to Kazakhstan include Roman Herzog (1995), Horst Köhler (2008) and Frank-Walter Steinmeier (2017, 2023). German Federal Chancellors Gerhard Schröder (2003) and Angela Merkel (July and December 2010) visited Kazakhstan.
Visits of German Foreign Ministers to Kazakhstan include Guido Westerwelle (2010, 2012), Frank-Walter Steinmeier (2014) and Annalena Baerbock (2022).
Germany was visited by Prime Minister Serik Akhmetov (2012), First Deputy Prime Minister Roman Sklyar (2019, 2020, 2021, 2023), Ministers of Foreign Affairs Kanat Saudabayev (2009), Erzhan Kazykhan (2011), Erlan Idrissov (2013, 2016), Beibut Atamkulov (2019), Mukhtar Tileuberdi (2020, 2022), Special Representative of the President for International Cooperation Erzhan Kazykhan (2021).
The Kazakh and German Foreign Ministries hold regular political consultations.
Inter-parliamentary friendship groups were established in the Parliaments of Kazakhstan and Germany.
Trade and Economic Cooperation
In 2023, trade between Kazakhstan and Germany amounted to $3.9 billion (export – 742.3 million, import – 3.15 billion), in 2022 – $2.8 billion (export – 532.7 million, import – 2.2 billion).
The gross direct investment inflow from Germany to Kazakhstan from 2005 to the 3rd quarter of 2023 totaled $7.2 billion.
Kazakhstan and Germany promote engagement within the framework of the Intergovernmental Working Group on Trade and Economic Cooperation, the Kazakhstan-German Business Council for Strategic Cooperation, the Berlin Eurasian Club.
