On September 23rd 2020 President of Kazakhstan K.Tokayev proposed the initiative to establish the International Agency for Biological Security based on the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC).
This proposal aims to fill the gap in the current disarmament architecture, where the BWC remains the only major disarmament treaty lacking an implementation body.
The IABS initiative is promoted on all international platforms. The main work is being carried out within the Working Group (WG) on strengthening the BWC in Geneva. The concept and draft Charter of the Agency have been distributed among all UN and BWC member states.
In 2024 the resolution on Strengthening and Institutionalizing BWC that calls on countries to consider the possibility of establishing IABS was adopted by consensus during the First Committee of the 79th session of UNGA.
