The geodesy and cartography industry is designed to provide the public sector and private structures of Kazakhstan with maps, topographic and cartographic materials and data on terrain objects in graphic, digital, photographic and other formats. This area is subject to constant changes and is characterized by the updating of technologies and related equipment and instruments. A significant breakthrough in the development of the industry is due to the application of space technologies and high-precision modern equipment.
In Kazakhstan this sphere is supervised by the Committee of Geodesy and Cartography.
The cartographic and geodesic industry occupies an important place in the economy and covers the military-industrial complex, the construction sector, which includes civil, residential, transport, hydraulic buildings and structures. This area also includes the study of mineral deposits, urban areas, land resources. The list of geodesic and cartographic works is very extensive, it includes cartographic, topographic, engineering and geodesic instrumentation, engineering geodesy, geodesic works in land management and cadastre, large-scale mapping of local objects related to the design and construction, which involves a complex of processes associated with the operation of industrial enterprises, engineering and scientific facilities.
This information is fundamentally important in the design and construction, including roads, survey work, in controlling the efficiency of land use, environmental and natural resource protection, geological exploration, etc.
One of the largest enterprises in the field of geodesy and cartography in the Republic today is the State Enterprise "National Cartographic and Geodesic Fund" (http://nkgf.kz/ru/o-nas/), which contains a large amount of information accumulated since the 30s of last century.
Of great importance to the industry is the enterprise of the State Enterprise "Kazgeodesia" (qazgeodesy.kz), which operates in such areas as high-precision satellite positioning using GPS and GLONASS data, aerial photography from aircraft using unmanned aerial vehicles, the creation of topographic maps and plans, geographic information systems (GIS), 3D-modelling, etc.
