Kostanay region is located in the Northern part of the Republic of Kazakhstan and was established in 1936.
The region includes: 16 districts and 4 cities of regional subordination.
The administrative center is the city of Kostanay, established in 1879, located on the Bank of the Tobol river.
Kostanay region borders with four regions of the Republic of Kazakhstan (Aktobe, Karaganda, Akmola and North Kazakhstan) and three Russian federations (Orenburg, Chelyabinsk, Kurgan). The length of the region's borders with the Russian Federation is 1,417 km.
The territory of the region is 196 thousand square kilometers (7.7% of the territory of Kazakhstan).
Natural and climatic conditions
The climate is sharply continental and very dry. Winter is long, frosty, strong wind and storm, summer is hot and dry. Annual precipitation amounts to 250-300 mm in the North and 240-280mm in the South of the region. The vegetation period is 150-175 days in the North and 180 days in the South.
