Creeping mustard or pink (Lat. Rhaponticum repens), also the name "Russian cornflower" (Russian knapweed) is a perennial root-springing plant, which is a difficult-to-eradicate weed, capable of causing significant damage to agriculture when spread. Gorchak is characterized by a powerful root system consisting of the main vertical root and horizontal roots extending from it to the sides. A powerful root system gives it the ability to absorb several times more nutrients and water from the soil than neighboring cultivated plants, which leads to their oppression and death. Horizontal processes grow to a width of up to three meters. The main taproot can penetrate to a depth of more than ten meters, reaching the groundwater level and using moisture inaccessible to other weeds and cultivated plants. In a year, one free-growing mustard plant, under favorable conditions, can form a curtin (hearth) with a diameter of about five meters. The segments of the roots of the mustard plant take root well and give rise to new weed curtins, and the seeds of the plant are very resistant to drought and can be in the soil for up to five years. In conditions of sufficient moisture, the weed, developing a huge vegetative mass, obscures and suppresses cultivated plants. The harmfulness is also aggravated by toxins released into the soil by the root system and slowing down the growth and development of other plants. In conditions of a highly moist floodplain or saline soils, the toxicity of mustard can significantly increase. When wheat or other grain crops contain seeds of creeping mustard in an amount of 0.04% by weight, the flour obtained from this grain acquires a bitter taste. When feeding hay to cattle with an admixture of mustard, the taste of milk becomes bitter. Pink mustard belongs to the number of plants whose toxicity is unstable, but under certain growing conditions, the alkaloids of the plant can be poisonous to horses. Horses do not eat mustard on the pasture, and when overgrazing, it is able to spread to its entire territory. Cattle, sheep and camels eat mustard occasionally showing symptoms of poisoning.
When detecting creeping mustard, quarantine zones are established with the indication of the boundaries of its distribution. The authorized body issues and monitors the execution of instructions on the implementation of plant quarantine measures in the territory of the distribution of mustard. The implementation of permanent state quarantine phytosanitary supervision over the implementation of plant quarantine measures, timely detection, localization and elimination of existing hotbeds of pink mustard, are aimed at protecting plant and food resources and also increasing the competitiveness of domestic products.
