Kostanay regional Museum of local history

Kostanay Regional Museum of Local History is one of the oldest in the Republic of Kazakhstan, founded in 1915. The museum is located in the city center, in a building that is an architectural monument of the early twentieth century. It has a representative office in the city of Zhitikara and a department of research support for regional history in the village of Karabalyk. The museum also includes the Department of Fine Arts, located in the building at the address: Kostanay, Altynsarina str., 113.

In accordance with the Regulations approved by the decree of the Akimat of Kostanay region No. 438 dated 12.10.2013, the main activity of the museum is: storage, study and public presentation of natural history, material and spiritual culture monuments located in storage facilities and exhibited in stationary exhibitions, at temporary exhibitions, both in the museum itself and outside it, and also in digitized form on the museum's website and on social networks.

The key area of work of the Kostanay Regional Museum of Local Lore is scientific research. Archival materials on the history of the region are being studied on an ongoing basis in the funds of the State Archive of the Kostanay region, the Central State Archive of the Republic of Kazakhstan (Almaty), the electronic fund of the State Archive of the Aktobe region. In 2001 – 2009, large-scale museum ethnocultural expeditions were organized, during which the history of settlement and the current socio-economic state of 134 villages in all districts of the region were studied. In 2021, a comprehensive scientific expedition on ethnocultural survey and monitoring of the Naurzum district was organized. In 2017-2019, monuments of Kazakh memorial and cult architecture, sacred places of Kostanay region were studied. From 2010 to 2022, the annual monitoring of characteristic landscapes, flora and fauna of the Kostanay region is carried out. In 2016-2018, paleontological studies were carried out on the brown coal section "Priozerny" and in the vicinity of the village of Kushmurun (Auliekolsky district), in the vicinity of the village.Zhuravlevka (Taranovsky district). In 2022, in cooperation with the Institute of Ecological and Agricultural Biology of Tyumen State University, studies were conducted on the evolution of the paleobiosphere of the Zhuravlev formation.

In cooperation with the MacDonald Institute of Archaeological Research and the University of Cambridge (UK), the Scientific and Educational Center for Eurasian Studies (Russian Federation), the A.H. Margulan Institute of Archaeology (Almaty, RK), the Laboratory of Archaeological Research of the A.Baitursynov KSU implemented long-term research projects "Revolution - evolution of early Metallurgy of Eurasia", "Study of archaeological sites and artifacts Torgai region". Together with scientists of the Laboratory of Physical Anthropology of the National Heritage Research Institute of the Republic of Kazakhstan (Astana), a database of paleoanthropological materials of Kostanay and Akmola regions has been formed. In cooperation with scientists from the University of Copenhagen and the Center for Biogenetics (Denmark), the Karaganda University named after Academician E.A. Buketov, an international project was implemented to study the DNA genome of the ancient population of Kazakhstan.

According to the results of the research, a collection of scientific articles "Ancient Turgai and the Great Steppe: part and whole", a monograph catalog "Necropolis of the Bronze Age of Dzhangilda 5", an illustrated book "Ritual – sacred geometric complexes (geoglyphs) of Torgai" were published. Among the most interesting publications of the museum: illustrated albums "Kasietti Mura" (from the stock collections of the Kostanay Regional Museum of Local Lore)", "Art beyond the control of time. Works of fine art masters from the collections of the Kostanay Regional Museum of Local Lore", booklet "Sacred objects of Kostanay region", guide "Sacred objects of Kostanay region", "Map of sacred objects of Kostanay region".

The stock collections of the Kostanay Regional Museum of Local Lore comprise more than 140 thousand museum items - almost half of the entire museum fund of the region. Unique works of primitive art from the museum's archaeological collection are world-famous: a stone sculpture - "Tobolsk thinker", an altar with the head of an argali, the pommel of a sacrificial hammer "Hammer-God". The museum pays special attention to the formation of an ethnographic fund, having excellent collections of national costumes of the peoples of the region and jewelry. About 4 thousand works of painting, graphics and sculpture by leading masters of fine arts of Kazakhstan, Russia, Ukraine, Transcaucasia are represented in the museum's art collection. 40,491 storage units (27.3% of the total fund) have been converted to digital format. Information about the items of the main fund in digitized form is provided monthly to the National Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan for inclusion in the State Catalog of the Museum Fund of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The museum has 12 exhibition halls: the hall of archeology "The oldest history of the region", the hall of paleontology "The living past of the Earth", halls: "Natural resources of Kostanay region", "History of native land", "Foundation of the city of Kostanay", "National Liberation movement of 1916", "Kostanay region: hopes and achievements", "Kostanay region in the Great Patriotic War" (two halls), "Pride of the Kostanay land", "Rukhani zhangyru", a hall for temporary exhibitions. The museum complex also includes: A historical park and an "open-air museum" in the courtyard of the museum.

The exchange exhibition of the Kostanay Regional Museum of Local Lore "Poetry of folk costume" was successfully exhibited in Ust - Kamenogorsk, Akmola, Karaganda, Pavlodar regional museums, Lisakovsky Museum of History and Culture of the Upper Tributary; the exhibition "Ult madeniyetin ulyktagan meken – the Cradle of national cultures" – in the Museum of the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan (Astana); the exhibition "The Silver Path of the Masters of Kazakhstan" - at the Museum of Modern Art (Astana); The exhibition "Cultural Heritage of Kostanay region" from the museum's stock collections was exhibited in the North Kazakhstan Museum Association (Petropavlovsk) and the Akmola Regional Museum of Local Lore (Kokshetau). The rarities of the archaeological collection were presented at the exhibition "Unknown Kazakhstan – Archeology in the heart of Asia" at the German Museum of Mining in Bochum (Germany).

Kostanay Regional Museum of History and Local Lore successfully works with a multi-age audience, field cultural and educational events "Museum without Borders" are regularly organized. Memorable events for residents and guests of the city were interactive projects and actions: "Intrigues and secrets of the night museum", "Museum Stagecoach-On the way to Victory", "Night at the Museum", "Time connecting thread", "Not virtual reality Museum-land", "Step into the history of the city", "Women's view", "Family trip to the museum"; ethnographic and educational projects "Kazaktyn salt-dasturleri: atkeni men bugini", "Secrets of the man-made carpet", "Warmth of the native hearth", "Dombra Alemi", "Nauryz shuagi", "Secret life of exhibits".

More than 180 thousand people visit the museum annually and participate in its visiting cultural and educational programs.

In order to expand the information and communication infrastructure, a virtual 3D tour of the expositions of the Kostanay Regional Museum of Local Lore, as well as a 3D tour of the special project "Spiritual shrines of Kazakhstan. Sacred geography of Kazakhstan", which presents spherical panoramas, text, audio information on all sacred objects of Kostanay region.

On the official website of the museum http://kraeved-kst.kz/ru.html the entire work of the museum is reflected: information about the events held, information about new arrivals, etc. All events and exhibitions of the museum are announced in advance in press releases in the media and in social networks. Thus, equal opportunities for participation in cultural life have been created for all segments of the population, and access to museum collections has been provided.
