On December 11 and 12, 2018, the High Level Segment of the 24th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change was held in Katowice (Poland). This annual event is an important event where climate change issues are discussed and solutions are developed.
One of the main tasks of the Conference this year is the adoption of the “Code of Practice” for the implementation of the Paris Climate Agreement. This will allow participants to implement a concerted reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, attract investments in low-carbon technologies and adapt the economy to the conditions of a changing climate.
About 30 thousand delegates from 197 countries, including the UN Secretary-General Mr. A. Guteres, Head of the UNFCCC Secretariat Ms. P. Spinoza, Heads of State and Government, Ministers of the Environment, EU, OECD, International Financial Institutions, and well-known politicians like A. Gore, A. Schwarzenneger, arrived in Katowice to attend the conference.
The head of the Kazakhstan delegation - Vice-Minister of Energy of Kazakhstan Sabit Nurlybay, in his speech noted that Kazakhstan consistently pursues a policy of implementing the Paris Agreement in all sectors of the economy, including the development of renewable energy, carbon trading and energy efficiency. In this regard, the adoption of the “Code of Practice” will be the basis for achieving progress in the joint fight against global climate change and adaptation to it.
Kazakhstan, as a Party to the international climate treaty, ratified the Paris Agreement, accepting a voluntary contribution to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 15% from 1990 to 2030. The main provisions on combating climate change and its consequences are reflected in the strategic documents of our state, such as the Strategy-2025, the Concept on the transition to a "green economy", etc.
Also during the conference, bilateral meetings were held with government agencies of other countries, international financial institutions and global initiatives on further cooperation.
