On February 8, 1977, the Kokchetav Regional Committee of the Communist Party of Kazakhstan, at a meeting of the bureau, adopted a resolution "On the opening of the regional drama theater."
On October 28, 1977, the curtain was raised on the first theatrical season. The audience was presented the play "Intervention" by L.Slavin, directed by the chief director of the theater, Honored Artist of the Republic of Kazakhstan Yakov Aronovich Kuklinsky. Ya.A.Kuklinsky is a graduate of the Kiev GITIS named afterKarpenko-Kary, with a group of like-minded people, came from Kostanay to Kokshetau, and created the Russian drama Theater. Ya.A.Kuklinsky served as the permanent artistic director of the theater for 20 years (1977-1997).
For his services to the development of theatrical art, by Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Kazakh SSR dated 06/08/87, Kuklinskiy Ya.A. was awarded the honorary title "Honored Artist of the Kazakh SSR".

From November 2001 to January 2014, the director and artistic director of the theater was Honored Artist of the Republic of Kazakhstan Valery Vasilyevich Tarasov, who graduated from the Russian Theater Academy in Moscow in 1984 (economist, theater critic, head of theatrical business). Under his leadership, the theater achieved significant success, and large significant canvases of Russian, foreign and Kazakh drama appeared in the repertoire. The theater has emerged from oblivion to the level of a successful one, meeting the requirements of modernity, and able to fully participate in the theatrical life of the Republic and beyond.

The audience loves her performances: they are interesting and discussed by the audience, she is a director who is interested in different genres and is always ready to experiment. Theaters continue to play a key role in preserving and promoting cultural heritage. Over the past year, theaters have staged 26 new productions (22 in 2023), of which 15 are based on works by Russian authors (14 in 2023). During the year, 725 performances were shown by theaters, with an audience coverage of 89,201. Income from paid services amounted to 67,622.9 thousand tenge.
As part of the III International Theater Festival "ABISH ALEMI", dedicated to the 85th anniversary of Abish Kekilbayev, the play "The Stationmaster" of the Akmola Regional Russian Drama Theater was awarded the nomination "Best Director" and "Best Performance", and also received the TURKSOY award.
In addition, a talented theater actress, "Madeniyet salasyn uzdigi" Nurgul Ryspaevna was awarded the honorary medal "Uly dalanyn zhangar Tulgasy" at the festival, and the director of the theater, Honored Worker of Kazakhstan Beibit Salauatovich, was awarded the medal "For Services to the culture of the Turkic world".
At the VI Critics Theater Award, the director of the Russian Drama Theater, Beibit Bakhtygereev, was awarded in the Best Theater Manager nomination, and Alexandra Bukreeva and Timur Valiev were awarded in the Best Duo of the Year nomination. The director of the theater, "Honored Worker of the Republic of Kazakhstan" Bakhtygereev Beibit Salavatovich was awarded a Certificate of Honor from the Minister of Culture and Information of the Republic of Kazakhstan for his contribution to the development of culture and selfless work.
