The State Communal state-owned Enterprise Akmola Regional Museum of Local Lore of the Department of Culture, Archives and Documentation of the Akmola region is one of the oldest cultural institutions in the region. It was established in 1920 as the Kokchetav Museum of Local Lore at the county Department of Public Education, as a museum of visual aids.
Since January 1945, the regional museum became the Kokchetav Regional Museum of Local Lore in connection with its establishment in 1944. Kokchetav region. In those years, the regional museum was given the building of a former mosque in the city center.
Since 1974, the museum has been located in a building located near the central square of Kokshetau.
The museum building is a monument of history and architecture, which is under state protection. The building is two-storeyed, brick, built in 1904.
In 2000, the museum received the status of the Akmola Regional Museum of Local Lore, as the city of Kokshetau became the regional center of the Akmola region.
The first large-scale reconstruction of the regional museum was carried out in 2012.
In 2018, the open-air museum "Botai-Burabai" was opened, which fully reveals the Eneolithic era.
The museum's collections on the history, archeology, ethnography, nature and culture of the region in the regional museum currently number over 85,000 exhibits, the best of which are presented in the new exhibition halls.:
