The decree Of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan "On introduction of the national currency of the Republic of Kazakhstan" was issued on November 2, 1993. November 15, 1993 tenge entered into circulation, so this day is considered the official Day of the national currency.

Also on 15 November became a professional holiday of workers of financial system of the Republic of Kazakhstan, which is confirmed by the Annex to presidential Decree no. 164 dated 20 October 2011 "the List of professional and other holidays in the Republic of Kazakhstan".

The name "tenge" comes from the medieval Turkic silver coins "dengue" or "Tanga", from which, in turn, the name of the Russian coin "Denga" and the word money also came.
