August 19, 1992 – the date of establishment of diplomatic relations between the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Portuguese Republic.
In 2015, the Embassy of Portugal in Kazakhstan was opened.
In 2019, the Embassy of the RK in Portugal was opened.
Since January 2025, Jean Galiyev has been the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Kazakhstan to the Portuguese Republic.
Since February 2026, Jose de Castro Ataide Amaral has been the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Portuguese Republic to the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Contacts at the highest and high levels
President of the RK N. Nazarbayev visited Portugal with a working visit on November 18-19, 2010 within the framework of participation in the NATO Summit.
President of the RK K. Tokayev held a meeting with the President of the PR M. Sousa within the framework of the 74th and 78th sessions (September 2023) of the UNGA.
Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Portugal Luis Amado and Paulo Portas visited the RK three times (2010, 2012 and 2014).
Minister of Foreign Affairs of the RK E. Idrissov and Deputy Prime Minister - Minister of Foreign Affairs of the RK M. Tleuberdi paid visits to Portugal (May 2013 and February 15-17, 2023, respectively).
In addition, visits were made by Deputy Prime Minister of the RK A. Zhumagaliyev (November 6-8, 2017), Akim of Astana B.Sultanov (April 4-6, 2019), Minister of Information and Social Development D. Abayev (June 20-23, 2019) and Chairman of the Supreme Audit Chamber A. Smailov (March 18-19, 2025).

April 2009 - visit of the Chairman of the Senate of the Parliament of the RK K. Tokayev to Portugal;
March 2012 - visit to Portugal of the delegation of the Parliament of the RK headed by I. Adyrbekov.
November 2024 – visit of the Chairman of the Senate of the Parliament of the RK M. Ashimbayev to Portugal to participate in the 10th Global Forum of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations in Cascais.
The parliamentary friendship group "Portugal - Kazakhstan" functions in the Assembly of the Republic.
