Kazakhstan - South Africa

March 5, 1992, diplomatic relations were established.

December 2013, the Embassy of the Republic of Kazakhstan opened in South Africa.

December 2003, the Embassy of South Africa in Kazakhstan was opened (it was relocated to Astana in February 2008).

Since January 2023, Y.Akhinzhanov is the Ambassador of Kazakhstan to South Africa.

Since December 2016, Kiytumetzi S.T. Matthews is the Ambassador of South Africa to Kazakhstan.

Contacts at the highest and high level

September 2, 2002, President Nazarbayev visited South Africa to participate in the UN Conference on Environment and Sustainable Development in Johannesburg (Earth Summit).

August 24, 2023, President K.Tokayev participated in the meeting of the BRICS Africa Outreach and BRICS Plus Expanded Dialogue within the framework of the XV BRICS Summit in Johannesburg as the SCO Chairman-in-Office in the online format.

1993 official visit of the Minister of Foreign Economic Relations of Kazakhstan S.Abishev to South Africa.

1997 working visit of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan K.Tokayev to South Africa.

July 2007, the Minister of Industry and Trade of Kazakhstan,
G.Orazbakov visited South Africa.

1-2 June 2023, working visit of the First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan, K.Umarov to South Africa to participate in the BRICS Ministerial Council in Cape Town. In the framework of the visit, the Kazakh diplomat held a meeting with South African Foreign Minister N.Pandor.

Seven inter-ministerial consultations have been held at the level of deputy foreign ministers (the last one in June 2023 in Astana).

Inter-parliamentary cooperation

December 4, 2008, working visit of the Chairman of South Africa's ruling party, the African National Congress J.Zuma.

May 16, 2023, meeting of the Chairman of the Majilis of the Parliament of Kazakhstan E.Koshanov with the Chairman of the Lower House of the Parliament – National Assembly of South Africa N.Mapisa-Nkakula within the framework of his participation in the Interparliamentary Conference in Baku.

Trade and economic cooperation

Trade turnover between Kazakhstan and South Africa for 2023 amounted to 69.2 million US dollars. Exports – 8.4 million dollars, imports – 60.7 million dollars.

Kazakhstan exports include sulfur of all kinds, ferroalloys and ball or roller bearings.

Imports to Kazakhstan include mechanical equipment and machinery, computers, ferrous metal products, electronic devices, communication equipment, organic chemical products, ores, rubbers, rubber products, plastics and plastics products, automobile equipment, etc.

According to the National Bank of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the volume of FDI from 2005 to Q3 2023 (18 years) – 44.67 million dollars, at the end of 2021 – 14.2 million dollars, and 2022 – 2.2 million dollars.

As of December 2023, 17 enterprises with South African participation are operating in Kazakhstan. In particular, since 2016, the largest joint Kazakh-South African enterprise in Central Asia for producing modern armored wheeled vehicles has been operating based on Kazakhstan Paramount Engineering LLP.
