Political cooperation

The first official visit of the First President of Kazakhstan – Elbasy Nursultan Nazarbayev to Canada in June 2003 became an important milestone in the history of bilateral relations. This visit has laid a solid foundation for the promotion of political dialogue, trade and economic cooperation, cultural and people-to-people ties.

First President Nazarbayev met with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at the G20 Summit in Hangzhou in August 2016.

In December 2018, The Right Honorable Julie Payette, Governor General of Canada, visited Kazakhstan. During the visit she met with First President Nazarbayev and Senate Chairman Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, and witness the launch of the Canadian astronaut David Saint-Jacques from the Baikonur Cosmodrome.

The bilateral agenda on international issues includes non-proliferation of WMDs, countering terrorism, peacemaking, Afghanistan and Central Asia. Kazakhstan and Canada have been consistently developing cooperation within the UN, the OSCE, and other international forums.

A number of heads of government agencies, parliamentarians and business delegations have been visiting both countries regularly. Canadian representatives participate in the Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions, Astana Economic Forum, Eurasian Media Forum and other international events in Kazakhstan.

As part of the inter-parliamentary dialogue, visits of high-level parliamentary delegations took place in 2012, 2014 and 2017. The Honourable Robert Nault and Senator Joseph Day have been leading the Kazakhstan Canada Parliamentary Cooperation Group. Both Chambers of the Parliament of Kazakhstan have also formed cooperation groups with Canada.
