2026 marks the 160th Anniversary of the birth of Alikhan Bokeikhanov – one of the key leaders of the early 20th century Kazakh national movement, an outstanding politician, public figure, journalist, and publicist. Alikhan Bokeikhanov was the main ideologist and leader of the “Alash” movement – a national-democratic organization advocating political freedoms, cultural revival, and autonomy for the Kazakh people. During 1917-1920, he headed the government of the Alash-Orda autonomy, consistently defending the principles of national self-determination, democratic development, education, and the establishment of the Kazakh press. Journalism and publicist activity played a significant role in his work. Alikhan Bokeikhanov actively published articles and analytical materials in the Қазақ (“Kazakh”) newspaper and other periodicals of his time, contributing to the formation of public opinion and the strengthening of national consciousness. His ideas of freedom, justice, and civil rights had a profound influence on the development of Kazakh socio-political thought. For his beliefs, he faced persecution and became a victim of Stalinist repression; nevertheless, his contribution to the history of Kazakhstan is rightly considered fundamental and continues to hold significance to this day.
