On August 21, 1992 diplomatic relations were established.
In October 1992 the Embassy of Italy in Kazakhstan was opened.
Since September 2021 Ambassador of Italy in Kazakhstan is M.Alberti.
In 1996 the Embassy of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Italy was opened.
Since March 2021 Ambassador of Kazakhstan in Italy is E.Sembayev.
Political relations
Contacts at the highest level
The First President of Kazakhstan Yelbasy N.Nazarbayev paid official visits to Italy in September 1994, September 1998, February 2003 and November 2009. During the visit of Yelbasy in November 2009 an Interstate Treaty on Strategic Partnership between Kazakhstan and Italy was signed.
The President of Italy O.L.Scalfaro (May 1997) and Chairman of the Council of Ministers paid a return visit to Kazakhstan (three official visits: Romano Prodi in September 1998 and October 2007, Silvio Berlusconi in October 2008; four working visits: Silvio Berlusconi in December 2010 as part of his participation in the OSCE Summit, Mario Monti in March and April 2012, Matteo Renzi in June 2014 (Borovoe) as part of an Asian tour to Vietnam and China).
June 27, 2015 the First President of Kazakhstan N.Nazarbayev visited the World Expo 2015 exhibition in Milan to participate in the opening of the National Day of the Republic of Kazakhstan and took part in the Kazakh-Italian business forum with the President of the Council of Ministers M.Renzi.
Yelbasy N.Nazarbayev held meetings with the President of the Council of Ministers of Italy within the framework of international events (Enrico Letta – September 6, 2013, G20 Summit in St.Petersburg; Matteo Renzi – October 17, 2014, ASEM Summit in Milan and June 17, 2016, St.Petersburg International Economic Forum in St.Petersburg; Giuseppe Conte – October 19, 2018, ASEM Summit in Brussels).
Interparliamentary cooperation
Interparliamentary friendship groups have been created in the Italian Parliament and the Majilis of the Parliament of Kazakhstan. The visits of parliamentary delegations of the two countries contribute to strengthening ties between parliamentarians.
On June 5-6, 2018 Chairman of the Senate of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan K.Tokayev paid an official visit to Rome, during which he had a meeting with the President of the Senate of the Parliament of Italy M.E.Alberti Casellati.
On March 13-15, 2019 the Deputy Chairman of the Majilis of the Parliament of Kazakhstan G.Isimbayeva paid a working visit to Italy, during which she had meetings with the Vice Presidents of the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies of the Italian Parliament P.Taverna and F.Rampelli, respectively.
On June 8-11, 2019 the delegation of Italian parliamentarians headed by the Vice President of the Chamber of Deputies E.Rosato was in Nur-Sultan to participate as observers on the elections of the President of Kazakhstan (June 9).
On September 23-24, 2019 Nur-Sultan was visited by Quaestor of the Chamber of Deputies of the Italian Parliament E.Cirielli and deputy E.Rossini to participate at the IV Meeting of Speakers of Eurasian Parliaments «Greater Eurasia: Dialogue. Trust. Partnership».
November 26, 2020 Quaestor of the Chamber of Deputies of the Italian Parliament and the Chairman of the Group of friendship «Kazakhstan-Italy» E.Cirielli participated at the International parliamentary online conference dedicated to the Day of the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
On January 7-11, 2021 Italian parliamentarians A.Delmastro Delle Vedove and G.Russo visited Nur-Sultan to participate as observers in the parliamentary elections in Kazakhstan (January 10).
On June 8, 2021 an online meeting was held between members of the group on interparliamentary cooperation «Republic of Kazakhstan - Italian Republic», headed by leaders D.Mynbay and E.Cirielli.
On November 4-6, 2021 the Chairman of the Senate of Kazakhstan M.Ashimbayev paid the official visit to Rome and met with the Chairman of the Senate of the Italian Parliament M.Alberti Casellati and the members of the parliamentary friendship group «Kazakhstan-Italy» headed by E.Cirielli.
Contacts at the high level
Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan K.Tokayev visited Rome in February 1997.
In 2010 the State Secretary - Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan K.Saudabayev paid a working visit to Palermo.
On June 9-10, 2017 Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Italian Republic B.Della Vedova visited Nur-Sultan to participate in the official opening ceremony of EXPO-2017.
March 27-28, 2019 working visit of the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan R.Vassilenko to Rome.
On August 29, 2019 the official ceremony of the «Nazarbayev Prize for Peace without Nuclear Weapons and Global Security» was held in Nur-Sultan, where the Former Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs (2002-2008 and 2008-2011), Vice President of the European Commission (2004-2008) and President of the Institute for Eurasian Studies F.Frattini participated as a member of the Committee.
On November 13-14, 2019 Italian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation M.Di Stefano visited Kazakhstan and the Kazakh-Italian Business Forum.
On December 12-14, 2019 Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan E.Kosherbayev visited Rome to participate in the International Conference «Italy and Central Asia: strengthening mutual understanding, cooperation and partnership» (December 13).
On June 9, 2021 held an online meeting of Deputy Prime Minister - Minister of Foreign Affairs M.Tleuberdi with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Italy L.Di Maio.
On July 16, 2021 on the sidelines of the conference «Central and South Asia» in Tashkent Minister M.Tleuberdi met with the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Italy M.Di Stefano.
