Diplomatic relations between the Republic of Kazakhstan and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland were established on 19 January 1992.
The British Embassy in Kazakhstan was opened in October 1992.
The Embassy of Kazakhstan in the United Kingdom was opened in February 1996.
Since 6 October 2022 Magzhan Ilyassov serves as the Ambassador of the Republic of Kazakhstan to the Court of St James’s.
Since August 2021 Kathy Leach serves as Her Majesty’s Ambassador to the Republic of Kazakhstan.
Highest-level visits
The First President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev visited the United Kingdom 9 times (in 1991, 1992, 1994, 1997, 2000, 2006, 2012, 2013 and 2015).
Members of the British royal family visited Kazakhstan 9 times: the heir to the British throne Charles, Prince of Wales (1996); Anne, Princess Royal (1993); Prince Richard, Duke of Gloucester (2000, 2017); Prince Andrew, Duke of York, who was the UK’s Special Representative for Trade and Investment (2003, 2006, 2007 and 2010); and Prince Michael of Kent (2009).
On June 30 – July 1, 2013, the first state visit in the history of bilateral relations by British Prime Minister David Cameron to Kazakhstan took place, as a result of which a Joint Statement on the Strategic Partnership between two countries was adopted.
The First President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev met with British Prime Ministers on the sidelines of international events (with David Cameron on the sidelines of the ASEM Summit in Milan on 17 October 2014, with Theresa May on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Hangzhou on 4 September 2016 and on the sidelines of the ASEM Summit in Brussels on 19 October 2018).
High-level visits and contacts
On 17-18 March 2023 British Foreign Secretary James Cleverley visited Kazakhstan. During the visit James Cleverley met with the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Prime Minister Alikhan Smailov and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Roman Vassilenko.
On 7 June 2023 British Parliamentary Under Secretary of State Leo Docherty visited Almaty.
On 19 September 2023 Deputy Prime Minister - Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan Murat Nurtleu met with British Foreign Secretary James Cleverley on the sidelines of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly in New York.
On 2 October 2023 British Parliamentary Under Secretary of State Leo Docherty visited Astana, during which he took part in the 7th meeting of the Kazakh-British Strategic Dialogue.
During 25 to 27 September 2023 British Deputy Secretary of Defense James Heappey visited Kazakhstan.
On 20-21 November 2023 Minister of State at the Department for Business and Trade, Minister of State for the Investment Security Unit, and Minister for Industry and Economic Security Nusrat Ghani visited Kazakhstan. During the visit Nusrat Ghani met with the President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, took part in the meeting of the 10th anniversary meeting of the Kazakh-British Intergovernmental Commission, and opened the office of the British Trade Mission in Almaty.
On 15 December 2023 Deputy Prime Minister – Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan Murat Nurtleu had a telephone conversation with the UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron.
On April 24-25 2024 the UK Foreign Secretary D.Cameron paid an official visit to Kazakhstan as part of a tour of Central Asian countries and Mongolia. During the visit an Agreement on Strategic Partnership and Cooperation was signed.
On June 10-12 2024 Advisor to the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan B.Akchulakov and the leadership of JSC NC "KazMunayGas" conducted a working visit to London.
On June 23-25 2024 Advisor to the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan – Special Representative of the President on International Environmental Cooperation Z.Suleimenova visited the United Kingdom to participate in the high-level dialogue "COP29 - IEA High-Level Energy Transition Dialogue."
On July 25 2024 the Minister of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan A.Satkaliyev visited London. During this visit an agreement with the Asian Development Bank on advisory services for Kazakhstan's Hydropower Development Program was signed.
On August 31 2024 in Prague the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan R.Vassilenko met with the UK Foreign Office Deputy Head S.Doughty on the sidelines of the "GLOBSEC" forum.
On November 12 2024 on the sidelines of the COP29 climate conference in Baku the President of Kazakhstan K.Tokayev held a meeting with the UK Prime Minister K.Starmer.
Interparliamentary cooperation
On 15 September 2015 with the assistance of the Embassy, All-Party Parliamentary Group on Kazakhstan was established in the British Parliament. The chairman of the group is a member of the House of Commons Bob Stewart.
On 18-19 September 2022 the Kazakh delegation led by the Chairman of the Senate of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan Maulen Ashimbayev attended the state funeral ceremony of Queen Elizabeth II.
On 6 May 2023 the Kazakh delegation led by the Chairman of the Mazhilis of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan Yerlan Koshanov took part in the coronation ceremony of King Charles III.
On 18-20 May 2023 a delegation of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the British Parliament visited Kazakhstan.
On 8-9 June 2023 Chairman of the Defense Committee of the British Parliament Tobias Elwood took part in the Astana International Forum.
On 12-18 December 2023 member of the House of Commons of the British Parliament Afzal Khan visited Kazakhstan.
Consultation Mechanisms
An annual Strategic Dialogue meeting is held between Kazakhstan and the United Kingdom. The 7th meeting took place on October 20, 2023 in Astana at the level of deputy foreign ministers.
