Kazakhstan and Malaysia have been building a stable and progressively developing trade and economic partnership since 1996, when the first high-level official visit laid the legal foundation for bilateral engagement.
Today, cooperation spans a wide range of sectors, including the oil and gas industry, oilfield services, Islamic finance, infrastructure and housing construction, agriculture, the halal industry, the digital economy, and tourism. In recent years, increasing importance has been placed on green energy, logistics, and industrial cooperation.
By 2025, bilateral trade turnover is projected to grow and reach approximately USD 221 million, reflecting a recovery in business activity and demonstrating potential for further expansion. At the same time, the trade structure remains complementary, encompassing both industrial goods and consumer products.
The cumulative volume of Malaysian direct investment in Kazakhstan has exceeded USD 94 million, with a concentration in energy, mining, and infrastructure. Dozens of companies with Malaysian participation are operating in the country, and the presence of Malaysian businesses at the Astana International Financial Centre continues to grow.
The institutional framework for cooperation is provided by the Joint Trade and Economic Committee and the Business Council, which ensure regular dialogue between government agencies and business communities. The next session of this intergovernmental mechanism is scheduled to take place in Astana and is expected to provide additional momentum for the implementation of joint projects.
Despite the geographical distance, both countries are consistently working to enhance transport and logistics connectivity, including the development of direct air links and the deepening of cooperation in the railway sector, thus creating new opportunities for trade and investment.
Overall, Kazakhstan views Malaysia as an important partner in Southeast Asia and considers bilateral economic cooperation a promising area with significant potential for growth and diversification.
