Bilateral relations

Bilateral cooperation began with Malaysia’s recognition of the independence of the Republic of Kazakhstan on 31 December 1991.

Diplomatic relations between the two countries were established on 16 March 1992.

Over the years, Kazakhstan and Malaysia have developed a constructive and trust-based dialogue. Kazakh-Malaysian relations have demonstrated dynamic growth, while multilateral cooperation continues within the framework of both regional and international organizations.

In 1996, Kazakhstan opened its Embassy in Kuala Lumpur, which also became the country’s first diplomatic mission in Southeast Asia. In the same year, Malaysia opened its Embassy in Kazakhstan.

Since 1996, Astana and Putrajaya have maintained sister-city relations.

The foundations and priorities of cooperation between the two countries are shaped by regular political dialogue at the highest and high levels, serving as the basis for the development of friendly and mutually beneficial ties. In 2024, the official visit of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to Kazakhstan provided additional momentum for the expansion of bilateral cooperation.

Kazakhstan and Malaysia continue to strengthen interparliamentary cooperation. In 2023, interparliamentary “friendship groups” were established, and their meetings and delegation exchanges are held on a regular basis. A solid legal and treaty framework has been formed, covering a broad range of areas, including trade and economic cooperation, scientific and technical collaboration, cultural and humanitarian exchange, and law enforcement cooperation.

Cooperation on the international stage and mutual support remain among the important priorities of the foreign policies of both countries.

Kazakhstan and Malaysia share common positions on key global issues, such as combating international terrorism and extremism, promoting dialogue between the Muslim world and the West, and creating a fair trade and investment system for developing countries, among others.

Astana and Putrajaya actively cooperate within international and regional institutions, including the United Nations (UN), the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA), where Malaysia holds observer status, the Asia Cooperation Dialogue (ACD), and other organizations, including through reciprocal support for candidacies in international organizations.
