Legalization of Documents and Apostille Certification

How to determine whether you need an apostille or consular legalization?
If the country where the document will be used is a party to the 1961 Hague Convention, then an apostille is required. Otherwise, consular legalization is necessary.

The most reliable source of accurate information is the organization where the legalized document is to be submitted, as different authorities—even within the same country—may have different requirements for the legalization of foreign documents. Therefore, it is essential to check the specific requirements of the authority where you intend to submit the document.

An apostille is applied to documents destined for countries that are parties to the Hague Convention of October 5, 1961. This convention abolishes the requirement of consular legalization and introduces a simplified procedure of legalization via the apostille stamp.

This procedure is considered simplified because it is quick and performed by a single authorized body. Moreover, the document gains legal validity in all countries that are parties to the Hague Convention.

If the destination country is not part of the Hague Convention, consular legalization is required. This is a more complex process involving certification by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the foreign embassy in Kazakhstan, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the destination country. The document will then be valid only in that specific country.
