On August 29, 1991, the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site was closed. Years later, that date took on global significance. At Kazakhstan’s initiative, the UN General Assembly unanimously adopted Resolution 64/35 in 2009, designating August 29 as the International Day against Nuclear Tests. The day serves as a reminder to the world of the human cost of nuclear testing and of the need to move toward a future free from the threat of nuclear weapons.
This year marks 35 years since the closure of the Semipalatinsk test site. To commemorate this milestone, Kazakhstan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Yermek Kosherbayev and Robert Floyd, Executive Secretary of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO), issued their traditional Joint Statement. For a people who lived through nuclear testing, 35 years is both a single moment in history and an immense journey, a journey from a land once shaken by explosions to a country that today speaks out against allowing such tragedies to happen again.
In this way, Kazakhstan transformed its own suffering into a voice heard around the world. The memory of Semipalatinsk has become a call to build a different future, one in which no land, no mother and no child will ever again live under the shadow of a nuclear mushroom cloud.
Perhaps this is the brightest lesson of this history: even after living through tragedy, a people can choose peace, hope and faith in a better future.

Dear compatriots!
I sincerely congratulate you on Abai Day!
The creative and intellectual legacy of the great thinker holds a special place in the treasury of both world and Kazakh culture. His teachings serve as a moral compass and a guide for life for our people. He spoke candidly about the problems facing society and warned against idleness and laziness.
Tokayev also recalled Abai's concept of Tolyk Adam ("The Complete Person"), which calls on individuals to continuously work on themselves, strive for spiritual growth, and pursue self-improvement.
This year, we celebrate Abai Day against the backdrop of a large-scale transformation of the state and society. The People’s Constitution of Kazakhstan has come into force, and the process of renewing all institutions of government has begun. This is truly an epoch-making period that is laying the foundation for the country’s development for many years to come. This month, the first elections to the Kurultai in our history will be held. A unicameral Parliament will bring a new quality to our reforms.
The essence of these transformations is to give powerful momentum to Kazakhstan’s progress and strengthen constructive values in society. In shaping a new social ethic, strengthening national identity and promoting humanistic ideals, we consistently turn to Abai’s legacy. The great poet and philosopher saw the future of his people in the pursuit of knowledge, hard work and responsibility, and prophetically called for unity and harmony. The Words of Edification remain an inexhaustible source that nourishes the entire system of values of modern Kazakhstan. The conceptual ideas of “Adal Azamat,” “Taza Kazakhstan,” and “Law and Order” form the foundation of the harmonious society that Abai envisioned. Today, we are building a Just, Strong and Progressive Kazakhstan.
I am confident that the legacy of the great thinker will continue to serve the cause of nurturing genuine patriotism and love for our Motherland.
I wish you all good health, prosperity and new achievements!
Happy Abai Day!
