Diplomatic relations between the Republic of Kazakhstan and the People's Republic of China were established on January 3, 1992.
Since April 8, 2022, the Ambassador of Kazakhstan to China has been Shakhrat Nuryshev.
Since December 2024, the Ambassador of China to Kazakhstan has been Han Chunlin.
In addition to the Embassy of Kazakhstan in Beijing (since December 1992), there are consulates general in the Hong Kong SAR (since August 2003), Shanghai (since May 2005), and Xi’an (since March 2023), as well as a Passport and Visa Service in Urumqi (since March 1995).
In Kazakhstan, China is represented by its Embassy in Astana (established in Almaty in April 1992 and relocated to the capital in April 2005), and consulates general in Almaty (since August 2007) and Aktobe (since July 2024).
Previously signed high-level bilateral documents include: Treaty of Good-Neighborliness, Friendship and Cooperation (December 2002, Beijing); Joint Declaration on Establishing and Developing Strategic Partnership (July 2005, Astana); Joint Declaration on Developing a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (June 2011, Astana); Joint Declaration on Further Deepening the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (September 2013, Astana); Joint Declaration on a New Stage of Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (August 2015, Beijing); Joint Statement on Everlasting Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (September 2019, Beijing); Joint Statement (May 2023); Joint Statement (July 3, 2024, Astana).
High-level bilateral contacts: since 2019, President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and President of China Xi Jinping have held seven meetings.
Heads of government have conducted six sessions of the mechanism of regular meetings.
On November 3–5, 2024, in Shanghai, during the working visit of Prime Minister of Kazakhstan Olzhas Bektenov to China (combined with his participation in the opening ceremony of the 7th China International Import Expo), negotiations were held with Chinese Premier Li Qiang.
From 2015 to 2025, 23 meetings were held at the level of deputy prime ministers.
On March 18, 2025, the 12th session of the Cooperation Committee was held in Beijing, co-chaired by the First Deputy Prime Minister of Kazakhstan Roman Sklyar and Vice Premier of the State Council of China Ding Xuexiang.
At the legislative branch: April 23–26, 2024 – official visit of the Chairman of the Mazhilis of the Parliament of Kazakhstan, Yerlan Koshanov to China; January 12–14, 2025 – official visit of the Chairman of the Senate of the Parliament of Kazakhstan, Maulen Ashimbayev to China.
Regular meetings take place between the Foreign Ministers of the two countries.
– April 25–26, 2023 – official visit of the Deputy Prime Minister – Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan Murat Nurtleu to China and participation in the 4th "C5+China" Foreign Ministers' Meeting (Xi’an);
– March 28–30, 2024 – official visit of the Deputy Prime Minister – Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan Murat Nurtleu to China. During the visit, the first session of the Strategic Dialogue of foreign ministers of Kazakhstan and China was held, and a Memorandum on its establishment was signed;
– May 19–21, 2024 – official visit of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi to Kazakhstan, combined with participation in the SCO Council of Foreign Ministers;
– November 29 – December 1, 2024 – working visit of Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan Murat Nurtleu, combined with participation in the 5th "C5+China" Foreign Ministers’ Meeting.
