Relations between Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan
Diplomatic relations between the Republic of Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan were established on the 5th of October 1992.
Since June 20th 2024 the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Kazakhstan to Turkmenistan is Nogayev Nurlan Askaruly.
From December 31st 2020 the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Turkmenistan to the Republic of Kazakhstan is Rejepov Batyr Durdymuratovich.
In Turkmenistan the Consulate of the Republic of Kazakhstan functions in the city of Turkmenbashi, in Kazakhstan - the Consulate of Turkmenistan functions in the city of Aktau.
Cooperation in the political field
Since independence, relations between the Republic of Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan have been developing in the spirit of friendship and strategic partnership.
The contractual-legal base of bilateral cooperation consists of 59 documents. The main ones are: the Declaration on the development of further cooperation (February 27, 1997) and the Strategic Partnership Agreement (April 18, 2017).
On October 11, 2019, the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan K.K. Tokayev made a working visit to Turkmenistan to participate in a meeting of the Council of the CIS Heads of State. A meeting was held with the President of Turkmenistan G. Berdimuhamedov.
On April 28, 2021, a telephone conversation took place between the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan K.K. Tokayev and the President of Turkmenistan G. Berdimuhamedov. The parties had a thorough exchange of views on the prospects for the development of the Kazakh-Turkmen multifaceted cooperation, the strengthening of friendship and strategic partnership between the two states. G. Berdimuhamedov stated that Kazakhstan is the main partner of Turkmenistan in Central Asia.
On August 5-6, 2021, the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan K.K. Tokayev made a working visit to Turkmenistan (the Avaza national tourist zone on the coast of the Caspian Sea, Turkmenbashi) to participate in the third Consultative Meeting of the Heads of State of Central Asia.
On October 24-25, 2021, the state visit of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan K.K.Tokayev to Turkmenistan took place. As a result of the visit, 20 documents were signed, including the Agreement between the Republic of Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan on the delimitation of the Kazakh-Turkmen state border and the delimitation of adjacent sections of fishing zones on the Caspian Sea; Agreement between the government of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the government of Turkmenistan on the regime of the Kazakh-Turkmen state border. During the visit, the Head of State was awarded the highest state award of Turkmenistan - the Order of "Bitaraplyk" (Neutrality).
On February 14, 2022, a telephone conversation took place between the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan K.K. Tokayev and the President of Turkmenistan G. Berdimuhamedov, during which the Head of State supported the decision of G. Berdimuhamedov to hold extraordinary presidential elections on March 12, 2022.
On June 29, 2022, a working visit of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan K.Tokayev to Turkmenistan took place, within the framework of which the Head of State took part in the VI Caspian Summit, and also held talks with the President of Turkmenistan S.Berdimuhamedov and the Chairman of the Halk Maslakhaty of Milli Gengesh G.Berdimuhamedov.
On October 14, 2022, the President of Turkmenistan S.Berdimuhamedov took part in the regular meeting of the Council of the Heads of State of the CIS, as well as in the first Summit "Central Asia - Russia", held in Astana.
On October 15, 2022, the first state visit of the President of Turkmenistan S.Berdimuhamedov to the Republic of Kazakhstan took place. As a result of the visit, 13 documents were signed, including the Comprehensive Program of Cooperation between the Government of Turkmenistan and the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan for 2022-2024.
