Diplomatic relations between the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Islamic Republic of Iran were established on January 29, 1992.
The Embassy of Kazakhstan in Iran has been operating since 1993.
In October 2007, the Consulate General of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the city of Gorgan was opened.
In October 2018, a consulate began to function in Bender Abbas.
Since January 2019, Mr. A.Orazbay has been appointed Ambassador of the Republic of Kazakhstan to the Islamic Republic of Iran.
The Iranian Embassy in the Republic of Kazakhstan has been operating since 1992. The Islamic Consulates General in Aktau was opened in October 2009, and in Almaty in August 2012.
Since November 2018, the Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran in the Republic of Kazakhstan is Мr. M.S.Saber.
Political cooperation
Top level visits
The foundations of cooperation between the two countries were laid during the official visit of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan N. Nazarbayev to Iran in November 1992. During the visit, a Protocol was signed on the establishment of a Joint Intergovernmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Industrial and Scientific Cooperation.
The visit of the President of Iran A.H. Rafsanjani in October 1993 contributed to further strengthening of friendly relations.
Within the framework of the President’s visits to Tehran in May 1996 and October 1999, a number of economic agreements were signed in the field of transport, transit, oil and gas.
Iranian President M. Khatami twice visited Kazakhstan (May
1998) to participate in the ECO Summit and in April 2002 on an official visit.
In October 2007, the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan paid an official visit to Tehran, and also took part in the II Summit of the Caspian littoral states.
In April 2009, the Iranian President M. Ahmadinejad paid a visit to Astana. In June 2011, he took part in the SCO Summit.
In August 2013, the Head of State of Kazakhstan took part in the inauguration ceremony of Iranian President H. Rouhani.
In September 2014, the Iranian President H.Rukhani paid a state visit. During the visit, a Joint Statement was adopted, an Agreement was signed on international road transport of passengers and goods, and a Roadmap for the development of trade, economic and investment cooperation.
On April 11-12, 2016, the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan paid an official visit to Tehran, during which more than 60 bilateral documents were signed, including 48 commercial agreements and contracts totaling $ 1 billion 100 million.
December 21-22, 2016 the official visit of the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran H. Rouhani to the Republic of Kazakhstan took place.
On September 10, 2017, Iranian President H. Rouhani took part in the First OIC Summit on Technology and Science in Astana.
On August 12, 2018, Iranian President H. Rouhani took part in the Caspian Summit in Aktau.
The two leaders met at the 13th SCO Summit in Bishkek (September 2013), the 4th CICA Summit in Shanghai (May 2014), the Caspian Summit in Astrakhan (September 2014), the opening ceremony of the Kazakhstan railway -Turkmenistan-Iran (December 2014), meetings of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council in Sochi (October 2019).

The parties successfully cooperate in the framework of regional and international structures: the UN, OIC, CICA, SCO, ECO, the Special Working Group on the Caspian Sea.
Iran supported the candidacy of Kazakhstan for non-permanent members of the UN Security Council for 2017-2018, voted to host the International Specialized Exhibition "EXPO-2017" in Astana, and signed the Charter of the Islamic Organization for Food Security with headquarters in Astana.
In Almaty, two rounds of negotiations of the six world powers and Iran on the Iranian nuclear program (February and April 2013) were held.
Iran, as one of the guarantor countries of the armistice in Syria, participates in international meetings within the framework of the Astana process.
Inter-Parliamentary Engagement
Recently, contacts between parliamentarians of the two countries have intensified significantly.
On June 26-27, 2019, at the invitation of the Iranian side, a visit was made by the deputy of the Mazhilis of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan, The Secretary of the Committee for Social and Cultural Development of the Parliament of Kazakhstan, The Head of the Kazakhstan-Iran Inter-parliamentary Cooperation Group B. B. Mamraev in Isfahan to attend the regular meeting of the Standing Committee of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly (APA).
Within the framework of the visit, bilateral meetings were held with the First Vice Speaker of the IRI Parliament - the head of the Iranian delegation, Dr. Masoud Peseshkian and APA Secretary General Mr. M.R. Majidi.
On September 23-24, 2019, the First Vice-Speaker of the IRI Parliament M.Peseshkian took part in the 4th meeting of speakers of Eurasian countries, which was held in Nur-Sultan. During the visit, he met with the leadership of the Parliament and the country.
on October 7-8, 2019, Member of the Senate of the Parliament of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan Mr. T.Musabaev visited Tehran to participate in World Space Week.
