
General information
Diplomatic relations between the Republic of Kazakhstan and the United Mexican States were established on January 14, 1992.
In 2015, the Embassy of the Republic of Kazakhstan was opened in the capital of Mexico.
The Ambassador of the Republic of Kazakhstan to Mexico since November 2024 is H.E. Mr. Almurat Turganbekov.
The Embassy of Mexico in the Republic of Turkey is concurrent in the Republic of Kazakhstan.
Political relations
Political relations between the Republic of Kazakhstan and the United Mexican States are characterized by a friendly nature and a high level of mutual understanding. Contacts are carried out at the high and the highest levels.
The first meeting ath the highest level between the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev and the President of Mexico Enrique Peña Nieto took place on April 7, 2013 in China on the sidelines of the Boao Asian Forum.
On September 5, 2013, in St. Petersburg, on the sidelines of the G20 Summit, another meeting between the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev and the President of Mexico Enrique Peña Nieto took place.
The first official visit to Mexico by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan was made in September 2014. During the visit, an Intergovernmental Agreement on the abolition of visa requirements for holders of diplomatic and service passports, a Memorandum between the foreign ministries of the two countries on establishing a mechanism for political consultations, as well as a Memorandum of Understanding in the field of academic cooperation between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mexico and the Academy of Public Administration under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan were signed. During the visit, the first Kazakh-Mexican business forum was held and a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between “KaznexInvest” and the Mexican Investment Agency “ProMexico”.
The Mexican delegation led by the Subsecretary of Foreign Affairs Carlos de Icaza visited Astana as part of the celebration of Mexico's National Day at EXPO-2017 in August 2017.
As part of the International Forum in Doha (Qatar), on March 26, 2022, a bilateral meeting was held between the Deputy Prime Minister – Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan Mukhtar Tleuberdi and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Mexico Marcelo Ebrard.
On September 21, 2023, within the framework of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly, a bilateral meeting was held between the Deputy Prime Minister – Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan Murat Nurtleu and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Mexico Alicia Barcena Ibarra, during which the Mexican side reaffirmed its intention to open its Embassy in Kazakhstan.
Interparliamentary dialogue is developing. Kazakh and Mexican parliamentarians held meetings during international interparliamentary events. In particular, on the sidelines of the 10th General Assembly of Parliamentarians of the Asia-Pacific Region on Environment and Development (Mexico, November 2003) and the 110th Assembly of the Interparliamentary Union in Mexico City (April 2004).
On June 22-23, 2015, the Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Senate of the Mexican Congress Gabriela Cuevas Barron visited Kazakhstan. During the visit, meetings were held with the Chairman of the Senate of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Chairman of the Senate Committee of the Parliament on International Affairs, Defense and Security, as well as other heads of Kazakh departments.
The “Kazakhstan-Mexico” Friendship Group operates in the General Congress of the Chamber of Deputies of Mexico. The chairman of the group is the Deputy from the ruling “MORENA” party Jose Miguel de la Cruz Lima. In September 2023, the third meeting of the Friendship Group was held.
Close interaction is carried out through foreign policy departments. Political consultations are held regularly between the foreign ministries of the two countries. The third meeting took place in December 2022 in Mexico City at the level of directors of departments of the two countries. The next political consultations are planned for 2025.
