Bilateral Relations with the State of Kuwait

Kazakhstan – Kuwait

 General information. The diplomatic relations between the two countries were established on January 11, 1993.

The Embassy of Kuwait in Kazakhstan was opened in January 2015.

The Embassy of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Kuwait was opened in December 2014.

H.E. Mr. Azamat Berdibay was assigned the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Kazakhstan to the State of Kuwait in November 2020.

H.E. Dr. Umar Ahmed Muhammed Murad Al-Kandari was assigned the Ambassador of the State of Kuwait to the Republic of Kazakhstan in July 2022.

The high-level mutual visits. The foundations of cooperation between the two countries were laid during the official visit of the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan H.E. Mr. N.Nazarbayev to the State of Kuwait, held from August 31 to September 1, 1997.

On May 25-30, 1997, the official visit of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev to Kuwait took place.

In the framework of the Munich Security Conference on 16 February 2020 President of Kazakhstan H.E. Mr. Kassym-Jomart Tokayev meets with the Prime Minister of Kuwait H.E. Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah.

On July 19, 2023, on the sidelines of the First «Central Asia + GCC» Summit, the President of Kazakhstan H.E. Mr. Kassym-Jomart Tokayev met with the Crown Prince of Kuwait, H.E. Sheikh Meshaal Al-Ahmed Al-Jaber Al-Sabah.

In October 2008, the Vice Prime Minister - Minister of Foreign Affairs of the State Committee Sheikh Mohammed Al-Sabah visited Kazakhstan and took part in the International Conference «Common World: Progress through Diversity», as well as the 7th Ministerial Meeting members of the Asia Cooperation Dialogue.

On April 24-25, 2017, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan K. Abdrakhmanov visited the State of Kuwait as a part of his tour of the countries of the region.

At the invitation of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kuwait, the Deputy Prime Minister - Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan H.E. Mr. M.Tleuberdi paid an official visit to Kuwait, 24-25 March, 2022.

          On December 19, 2023, on behalf of the Head of State, the Government delegation of the Republic of Kazakhstan, led by Deputy Prime Minister - Minister of Foreign Affairs H.E. Mr. M.Nurtleu, visited Kuwait.

During the meeting with the Emir of the State of Kuwait, H.H. Sheikh Mishaal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, the Head of the Kazakhstan delegation expressed heartfelt condolences on the passing of Emir of the State of Kuwait H.H. Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah and conveyed a personal letter from the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan H.E. Mr. Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.

Inter-parliamentary relations. In October 2002, within the framework of a tour of the countries of Central Asia, a delegation of the National Assembly of Kuwait visited Kazakhstan. The parliamentary delegation held bilateral meetings in the Senate of the Parliament of Kazakhstan.

From 25 to 26 June 2010, the Kuwaiti parliamentary delegation headed by a member of the group of inter-parliamentary cooperation of the National Assembly of the Civil Code, deputy H.E. Mr. Walid Musaid Al-Tabtabagi paid an official visit to Kazakhstan.

In September 2019, Chairman of the National Assembly of Kuwait H.E. Mr. Marzuk Ali Al-Ghanim, paid a visit to Kazakhstan to participate in the Meeting of Speakers of Parliaments of Eurasian Countries.

Trade and economic cooperation. There has been a steady development in the sphere of Kazakhstani-Kuwaiti trade, economic and investment cooperation in recent years.

Mutual trade. According to the Statistics Committee of the Ministry of National Economy of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the trade turnover between Kazakhstan and Kuwait for 2023 amounted to 3,7 million USD (exports – 3,0 million USD, imports – 700 thousand USD).

          The main export groups are agriculture and animal products, processed food products, as well as products of the chemical and related industries.

Kazakhstan-Kuwait Intergovernmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technical and Cultural Cooperation

The 1st meeting of the joint Kazakhstan-Kuwait intergovernmental commission on trade, economic, cultural, and humanitarian cooperation held on November 2008 in Astana became an important stage in bilateral relations.

The 2nd meeting of Kazakhstan-Kuwait intergovernmental commission was held in January 2010 in Al-Kuwait City.

On September 23-24, 2013, the 3rd meeting of the Kazakhstan-Kuwait Intergovernmental Commission for Trade, Economic, Cultural and Humanitarian Cooperation was held in Astana, during which the ways of interaction in the field of energy, oil and petrochemical industry, and higher education, culture, health, tourism, ecology, social welfare, as well as youth and sportswear discussed.

Cultural and humanitarian cooperation. As part of the implementation of the Protocol of the 1stmeeting of the IGC, which was signed in Astana, the Days of Culture of Kazakhstan were held on December 15-16, 2008 in Kuwait, which were devoted to the 15th anniversary of establishing bilateral diplomatic relations.

January 12-15, 2018 The Chamber Orchestra of the Opera and Ballet Theatre “Astana Opera” under the direction of A. Mukhitdinova took part in the Garin Festival in Kuwait.

Since 2008, students of the Department of Oriental Studies at the Al-Farabi Kazakh National University study the 2-year program in the Arabic language at the language centre of the Kuwait State University.

Kuwaiti athletes took part in the 14th Asian Shotgun Championships, which took place in Shymkent, 10-20 September 2021.

40 Kuwaiti athletes took part in the 17th Asian Karate Championship, which was held in Almaty, 19-22 December 2021.

On October 13-16, 2022, the National team of the Republic of Kazakhstan took part in the 4th Asian Athletics Championships among boys under 18 years old in Kuwait.

On December 7-24, 2022, athletes of the Kazakhstan Sports Shooting Federation visited Kuwait as part of winter training before the 2023 World Championship.

The national judo team of the Republic of Kazakhstan achieved great success at the 2023 Asian Cup among girls and men, which was held in Kuwait City from April 28 to 29, 2023.

As part of their performance at the 2023 Asian Cup, the Kazakhstan team won 2 gold, 3 silver and 4 bronze medals among more than 150 judokas from 27 countries of the Asian continent.

On November 8-10, 2023, the Kuwaiti National team took part in the Asian Youth Karate Championship in Almaty, where Kuwaiti athletes won 1 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze medals.

On January 11-23, 2024, 18 members of the National team of the Republic of Kazakhstan took part at the licensed Asian Championship on skeet shooting in Al-Kuwait City, where Kazakhstan National team won 3 gold and 4 bronze medals.
