Bilateral Relations with the State of Kuwait

General Information

Diplomatic relations between the Republic of Kazakhstan and the State of Kuwait were established on 11 January 1993.

The Embassy of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the State of Kuwait was opened in 2014.

The Embassy of the State of Kuwait in the Republic of Kazakhstan was opened in 2015.

Since July 2025, Yerzhan Yelekeyev has served as the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Kazakhstan to the State of Kuwait.

Since April 2026, Adel Ahmed Sulаiman Al-Ghenaiman has served as the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the State of Kuwait to the Republic of Kazakhstan.

 

High-Level Visits

The foundations of cooperation between the two countries were laid during the official visit of the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan N.Nazarbayev to the State of Kuwait, held from August 31 to September 1, 1997.

On 16 February 2020, on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev met with the Prime Minister of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah.

On July 19, 2023, on the sidelines of the First «Central Asia + GCC» Summit, the President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev met with the Crown Prince of Kuwait Sheikh Meshaal Al-Ahmed Al-Jaber Al-Sabah.

On December 19, 2023, on behalf of the Head of State, the Government delegation of the Republic of Kazakhstan led by Deputy Prime Minister – Minister of Foreign Affairs M.Nurtleu visited Kuwait. During the meeting with the Emir of the State of Kuwait Sheikh Mishaal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah the Head of the Kazakhstan delegation expressed deepest condolences on the passing of Emir of the State of Kuwait Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah and conveyed a personal letter from the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.

On 12 November 2024, on the sidelines of the COP29 World Climate Summit in Baku, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev held a meeting with the Crown Prince of Kuwait, Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah.

 

Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation

In October 2002, delegation of the National Assembly of Kuwait visited Kazakhstan within the framework of the tour to the Central Asian countries.

From 25 to 26 June 2010, the Kuwaiti parliamentary delegation headed by a member of the group of inter-parliamentary cooperation of the National Assembly of the Civil Code, deputy Walid Musaid Al-Tabtabagi paid an official visit to Kazakhstan.

In September 2019, Chairman of the National Assembly of Kuwait Marzuk Ali Al-Ghanim paid a visit to Kazakhstan to participate in the Meeting of Speakers of Parliaments of Eurasian Countries.

 

Trade and Economic Cooperation

The trade turnover between Kazakhstan and Kuwait amounted to USD 455.7 thousand in January-May 2026. Kazakhstan's exports to Kuwait totalled USD 455.7 thousand.

The 1st meeting of the joint Kazakhstan-Kuwait intergovernmental commission on trade, economic, cultural, and humanitarian cooperation held on November 2008 in Astana and became an important stage in bilateral relations. The 2nd meeting of Kazakhstan-Kuwait intergovernmental commission was held in January 2010 in Al-Kuwait City. On September 23-24, 2013, the 3rd meeting of the Kazakhstan-Kuwait Intergovernmental Commission for Trade, Economic, Cultural and Humanitarian Cooperation was held in Astana.

 

Cultural and Humanitarian Cooperation

December 15-16, 2008 – Days of Kazakhstan Culture were held in Kuwait.

January 12-15, 2018 – the Chamber Orchestra of the Opera and Ballet Theatre “Astana Opera” under the direction of A.Mukhitdinova took part in the Garin Festival in Kuwait.

Since 2008, students of the Faculty of Oriental Studies at the Al-Farabi Kazakh National University study the 2-year program in the Arabic language at the language centre of the Kuwait State University.

September 10-20, 2021  Kuwaiti athletes took part in the 14th Asian Shotgun Championships, which took place in Shymkent.

December 19-22, 2021 – 40 Kuwaiti athletes took part in the 17th Asian Karate Championship, which was held in Almaty.

October 13-16, 2022 – the National team of the Republic of Kazakhstan took part in the 4th Asian Athletics Championships among boys under 18 years old in Kuwait.

December 7-24, 2022  athletes of the Kazakhstan Sports Shooting Federation visited Kuwait as part of winter training before the 2023 World Championship.

April 28-29, 2023  the National judo team of the Republic of Kazakhstan took part in the 2023 Asian Cup among girls and men in Kuwait City and 2 gold, 3 silver and 4 bronze medals.

November 8-10, 2023  the Kuwaiti National team took part in the Asian Youth Karate Championship in Almaty.

From 11 to 23 January 2024, 18 members of the national team of Kazakhstan participated in the Asian Shotgun Shooting Olympic Qualifying Championship, where Kazakh athletes won 3 gold and 4 bronze medals.

From 21 to 27 June 2024, the national fencing team of Kazakhstan achieved significant success at the Asian Fencing Championships held in Kuwait City. The women's team won silver medals, while the men's team claimed one gold and two bronze medals.

From 8 to 13 September 2024, a member of the national team of the State of Kuwait participated in the 5th World Nomad Games held in Astana.

From 20 to 30 September 2024, the men's national shotgun shooting team of the State of Kuwait achieved notable success at the Asian Cup 2024 held at the A. Asanov Shooting Club in the Almaty Region. The Kuwaiti team won the gold medal in the men's team double trap event.

On 26 November 2025, in Kyoto, Japan, a Memorandum of Cooperation was signed between the Kazakhstan Modern Pentathlon Federation and the Kuwait Modern Pentathlon Federation. The Memorandum aims to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the development of modern pentathlon, facilitate the exchange of experience, promote the training of athletes and specialists, and organize joint sporting events.

In order to promote business, cultural and humanitarian exchanges between Astana and Kuwait City, a visa-free regime allowing Kuwaiti citizens to stay in Kazakhstan for up to 30 days has been in effect since 2019.
