Kazakh-Ethiopian political relations

 

Diplomatic relations between the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia were established on September 5, 2011 through the exchange of notes. Kazakhstan considers Ethiopia as a trusted partner in Africa and intends to comprehensively strengthen bilateral cooperation.

High-level cooperation

On December 11-12, 2013, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan Y.Idrissov paid the official visit to Ethiopia. Meetings were held with President M. Teshome, Prime Minister H.Desalegn, Minister of Foreign Affairs T.Adhanom. During the talks, the sides discussed issues of trade, economic, investment and political cooperation.

On March 2, 2023 in Baku, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan K.Tumysh held a meeting with Deputy Prime Minister - Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia D.Mekonnen. The sides discussed the state and prospects of bilateral cooperation in the political, economic, cultural and humanitarian spheres. The Ethiopian side announced support for the initiative of the President of Kazakhstan to create an International Agency for Biological Safety.

Interaction of foreign ministries

On September 22, 2016, a Memorandum of Understanding on bilateral consultations between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia was signed in New York on the sidelines of the 71st session of the UN General Assembly. The parties agreed to hold consultations on bilateral relations and international issues of mutual interest.

On December 28, 2021, the first inter-ministerial consultations were held in the format of a videoconference. During the event, H.E. Mr. O.Onalbayev Director of Near, Middle East and Africa Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan and H.E. Mr. M.Asfaw, Director General of Middle East, Asia and Pacific Affairs Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia discussed the current state and prospects of bilateral cooperation, ways to intensify inter-parliamentary dialogue, development of bilateral legal framework, and exchanged views on topical issues of the international and regional agenda.

On March 5, 2023, a meeting was held between representatives of the Foreign Policy Research Institute (FPRI) under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Institute of Foreign Affairs (IFA) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia in the format of a videoconference. The Kazakh delegation was headed by H.E. Ambassador B.Nurgaliyev, Chairman of the Board of the FPRI under the MFA of Kazakhstan, Ethiopia was represented by Dr. D.Ambaw, Executive Director of IFA of MFA. During the meeting, the experts exchanged views and assessments of the situation in the field of international security, sustainable development, and regional cooperation. Following the meeting, the parties signed a Memorandum of Understanding and cooperation between the two institutions.

Inter-parliamentary dialogue

On February 27, 2020, Ambassador B.Sadykov met with the H.E. Mr. T.Chafo, Speaker of the House of Peoples Representatives of Ethiopia. The sides noted the friendly and constructive nature of the relations that have developed between the two countries. Speaker T.Chafo stressed the importance of intensifying bilateral relations, assuring of his full support for the proposals for their development.

On November 28, 2022, the first interparliamentary meeting of deputies of the friendship groups of Kazakhstan and Ethiopia was held during which the parties agreed to promote comprehensive cooperation between the two countries at their level. The Kazakh delegation was headed by H.E. Ambassador A.Kuspan, Chairperson of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defense and Security of Mazhilis of the Parliament of Kazakhstan. The Ethiopian Parliament was represented by H.E. Dr. Dima Noggo Sarbo, Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Foreign Relations and Peace Affairs of the House of People's Representatives of the Parliament.

Interaction with the public sector

On February 24, 2020, Ambassador B. Sadykov met with the President of the University of Addis Ababa, Professor T.Woldehanna. The prospects of cultural and educational cooperation between the two countries were discussed during the meeting.

On November 20, 2020, Ambassador B. Sadykov met with the Minister of Trade and Industry of Ethiopia M.Alebel. Minister M.Alebel noted Ethiopia's great interest in expanding trade, economic and investment cooperation with Kazakhstan and stressed the huge potential for such interaction.

On June 24, 2021, Ambassador B.Sadykov met with the Minister of Education of Ethiopia, Dr. Ing.G.Mekuria. Minister Ing.G.Mekuria expressed interest in expanding cooperation with Kazakhstan and noted good educational traditions in Kazakhstan, as well as a large number of African students who have received education in our country. The parties agreed to continue cooperation through educational programs and within the framework of UNESCO.

On July 1, 2021, Ambassador B. Sadykov met with the Minister of Health of Ethiopia L.Tadesse. Minister L.Tadesse expressed interest in strengthening cooperation with Kazakhstan in the field of medicine.

Cooperation within the framework of international organizations

Kazakhstan and Ethiopia have established and maintain trusting relations within the framework of multilateral global structures. Thanks to constant work and friendly contacts at various levels, Kazakhstan and Ethiopia carry out a mutually beneficial exchange of support in the organizations of the UN system.

Earlier, on the basis of reciprocity, Ethiopia supported Kazakhstan during the voting for non-permanent members of the UN Security Council for 2017-2018, at the elections of the venue of EXPO-2017, in the UN HRC, on the issue of the location of the Mausoleum of Yassawi in the UNESCO Tangible Heritage List, etc.
