27 июня 2023

Kazakhstan's education system helps to gain knowledge that enables to get a profession later. In the Republic of Kazakhstan, education is divided into general and vocational. School (secondary) education is divided into the classes: primary (grades 1-4), basic and senior. Primary vocational education (after the 9th grade) can be obtained in the specialized lyceums, while secondary vocational education can be received in the specialized schools or colleges.

Education system

The education system in the Republic of Kazakhstan consists of the several education levels

  • preschool education and training;
  • primary education;
  • basic secondary education;
  • secondary education (general secondary education, technical and vocational education);
  • post-secondary education;
  • graduate education;
  • post-graduate education.

The education system is supervised by the relevant ministries: Ministry of Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan and Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Secondary education

Secondary education in Kazakhstan is compulsory and includes primary, basic secondary (9 grades) and general secondary (11 (12) grades) education. There is also a vocational and secondary vocational education.

Children aged 6 years old are admitted to the first grade of school. Education in schools of Kazakhstan is comprised of 3 levels: primary (1-4 grades), basic (5-9 grades) and senior (10-11 (12) grades). Educational programs are developed for comprehensive development of capabilities of the especially gifted students and are implemented in the specialized schools for gifted children.

Technical and vocational education

Technical and vocational education is aimed at training of qualified workers and middle-ranking specialists and is delivered in the academies, colleges and tertiary colleges based on the basic secondary and (or) general secondary education.

The technical and vocational education in the country is delivered in the 772 technical and vocational education organizations, of which 446 are public and 326 are private. The total amount of students in technical and vocational education organizations is 517.3 thousand people, of which 312 thousand people have studied under the state order.

The major tasks of technical and vocational education are the following:

- the training of qualified workers and middle-ranking specialists;

- expanding the coverage of free-of-charge technical and vocational education;

- increasing the target state order at the request of the enterprises (10 thousand people annually);

- increasing the amount of scholarships for students of technical and vocational education organizations;

  • creating conditions for increasing the accessibility of technical and vocational education;
  • improving financial stability and targeted support of technical and vocational education;
  • improving corporate governance of technical and vocational education;
  • organizing and developing social partnership in the system of technical and vocational education;
  • creating equal conditions and barrier-free access for students with special educational needs;
  • ensuring consistency and continuity between the levels of education;
  • expanding international cooperation in the field of personnel training and re-training of in the technical and vocational education organizations.

In order to ensure the accessibility of technical and vocational education, since last year, the state order has been placed under the principle "money follows the student". Earlier the admission to the colleges was carried out according to the allocated places under the state order and currently the fellows could select the colleges and specialties as per their will. These measures ensure the transparency of state order distribution and admission of applicants to the colleges.

The applicants will be able to apply to the colleges through the Egov.kz portal or directly to the college. The applicants can choose up to 4 specialties and up to 4 colleges.

All the school graduates will be given an opportunity to undergo professional diagnostics through the education departments’ information systems. As a result, the applicants will get recommendations to select a particular specialty and be familiar with the datasheets of recommended industries.

The competition is conducted through the education departments’ information systems based on the diploma average score under required and vocation-related disciplines.

Also, the new mechanism is aimed at 100% coverage of the graduates with free-of-charge college tuition under highly demanded specialties.

Currently, higher education in Kazakhstan is at the stage of dynamic development that is dictated by scientific and technological progress requirements. Recently, the republic has undertaken global measures to upgrade and reform the education through introducing top notch teaching methods and developing up-to-date infrastructure and providing full-fledged student support.

Higher education structure and study format

Today, the Kazakhstani higher education system in the context of the Bologna process parameters is of the following structure:

There is possibility to go through a shortened educational programs process with an accelerated study period for the persons with acquired technical and vocational, post-secondary or higher education with re-crediting the grades  and crediting the earlier grades of disciplines accomplished provided for the sufficiency of the scope of study and continuity of the educational program.

In Kazakhstan, admission to universities is based on the Unified National Testing (UNT) results. Since 2017, they have been passing overall school exams attestation to obtain a certificate of secondary education, “Altyn Belgi” (with honors) and UNT score for admission to universities and receiving government grants for studying at universities. Since 2019, there is a possibility for school graduates to take the UNT four (4) times a year.

The UNT in electronic format is carried out in the following terms:

CYBER TUMAR

Now more than ever, children are spending more time on the internet for entertainment and communication. In Kazakhstan, children aged 9-17 report accessing the Internet at a relatively young age. While 46% had their first access to the Internet between the ages of five and eight, a further 5% had access when they were four years old or younger. While the Internet offers limitless opportunities and the potential to broaden horizons and stimulate creativity around the world, it can also pose a security risk.

Girls are generally more exposed to cyberbullying than boys. Almost twice as many girls (35% of girls compared to 18% of boys) reported that someone had sent them unpleasant or abusive messages.

The UNICEF representative office in Kazakhstan, in partnership with the European Union, the Committee for the Protection of Children's Rights under the Ministry of Education, has launched the Cyber Tumar information and education campaign, which is a set of information tools designed to help people navigate safely in cyberspace.

The initiative aims to help children stay safe online and learn how to manage potential risks.

The campaign focuses on online threats such as cyberbullying, online harassment of children, unwanted and prohibited content for children, digital risks to children's safety and privacy, child Internet addiction, etc.

  1. сайлау комиссиясының мүшесі;
  2. жергілікті өкілді немесе атқарушы органның лауазымды адамы;
  3. кандидаттың сенім білдірілген адамы;
  4. журналистерге-бұқаралық ақпарат құралдарының өкілі;

  1. сайлау комиссиясының мүшелерін;
  2. жергілікті өкілді немесе атқарушы органның лауазымды адамдарын;
  3. кандидаттың сенім білдірілген адамдарын;

Seven architectural wonders of Kazakhstan
18 октября 2021

One of the main reasons why tourists visit Kazakhstan is our pristine nature, but the architectural heritage attracts a lot of attention as well.

You are presented with the rating of the most amazing architectural constructions in Kazakhstan: starting from the era of clay, wood and stone to modern materials - concrete, steel and glass.

A Yurt (traditional Kazakh portable tent-house)

The photo shows a traditional Kazakh yurt set up on a green field under a cloudy sky.Architecture is a storehouse of rich information about the culture of certain ethnic groups. The inner construction of the yurt is the best way to tell us about the life of the Kazakh nomads. The early history of a yurt dates back to the 12th century BC, and the nomadic dwelling with a spherical dome, the so-called Kazakh yurt, was finally formed at the beginning of the 19th century. Like many years ago, a yurt today is an indispensable element in the lives of the modern descendants of nomads in Kazakhstan, Mongolia, and Kyrgyzstan. The main secret lies in its convenience, simplicity, and practicality: it is easily transportable, quickly assembled and the felt cover saves its inhabitants from rain, wind, and cold. A yurt is an inexpensive comfortable dwelling that is in no way inferior to a capital structure. The yurt is called a masterpiece of nomadic architecture.

Khan Shatyr

The image shows the Khan Shatyr building in Astana, brightly illuminated in the evening against the cityscape.Along with other eye-catching skyscrapers and futuristic structures, Khan Shatyr is the architectural highlight of Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan. Translated from Kazakh, this name stands for “Khan of the tents”. And the building lives up to its name as it has been listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the tallest tent-like structure in the world.

Khan Shatyr is one of the largest shopping and entertainment centers in all of Central Asia. Forbes magazine has included it in the top ten world ‘eco’ buildings.

It brilliantly embodies the concept of having a piece of land with an eternal summer. The unusual 150 meter high tent is made out of unique and innovative materials that regulates a constant cozy microclimate on the inside, no matter what the weather is like outside.

Khan Shatyr is a masterpiece of modern architecture that stands out amongst the growing architectural diversity of the modern metropolis of Astana.

Mausoleums of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi and Arystan Bab

The photo features the Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi in Turkestan — a historic brick building under a blue sky.The city of Turkistan is famous for its beautifully designed architectural monuments. The most outstanding of them is the Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi, or as it is sometimes called the second Mecca for the Muslim people. But it would be preposterous to talk about the mausoleum without mentioning the Mausoleum of Arystan Bab, without whom there would be no great individual like Yasawi. According to history, Arystan Bab used to be Ahmed Yasawi’s mentor.

In honor of the victory over the Golden Horde, the great emir Tamerlane planned to erect a magnificent building which is the Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi. In the middle of the city of Yassy (the former name of Turkistan), an unprecedented feat of construction was about to unfold, in which every townsman took part. But inexplicably, as time went on the walls kept getting ruined. After that, Tamerlane has a dream where he saw Ahmed Yasawi asking him to build a mausoleum for his teacher - Arystan Bab first.

Tamerlane erected a monumental shrine on the site, where once stood a small two-room mausoleum built by the followers of Arystan Bab after his death in the 12th century.

The Mausoleum of Arystan Bab was repeatedly destroyed due to weather conditions and was restored again. So in 1971, with the financial support of the locals, the mausoleum was rebuilt from burnt brick. The only reminder of the construction methods once used in Tamerlane’s era is the ancient carved columns which are carefully stored in it.

The sacred and majestic Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi proudly stands tall at 37.5 meters. Its construction was completed in 1405. The incredible energy of the tomb allows you to understand the story and touch the Kazakh culture.

The majority of travelers start their pilgrimage with a visit to the Mausoleum of Arystan Bab, before setting off for their pilgrimage to the Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi.

The Kazakhstan Hotel

The image shows the Hotel Kazakhstan in Almaty, set against green hills, mountains, and a TV tower.In the second half of the 20th century, the development of Almaty was almost experimental in its nature. Thanks to this, a lot of ambitious old-time ideas in the style of Soviet modernism, gave rise to quite some amazing feats of architecture. For example, a 102-meter 25-storey skyscraper - Kazakhstan Hotel, which was considered the tallest building in Almaty for 32 years. Despite the fact that it was not allowed to construct buildings above 12 floors due to the high seismic activity of the area.

Thanks to brand-new construction method that was quite innovative for those days, The Kazakhstan Hotel remains the most earthquake-resistant building in Almaty to this day.

The tower with a golden "crown" on its roof is truly an iconic building of Almaty.

Ascension Cathedral

The photo shows a bright Orthodox cathedral with colorful domes, surrounded by trees under a blue sky.There is a world-famous religious attraction site located in Almaty, which was built of wood with virtually no nails using unique ancient architectural technology. The Ascension Cathedral of the Russian Orthodox Church is one of the eight tallest buildings in the world made out of wood. The interior of the church is decorated with drawings, stucco moldings and wrought-iron ornaments which give special splendor to this holy place.

This unique cathedral opened its doors for parishioners in 1907. Unluckily just three years later, a severe earthquake struck the city, destroying almost all the buildings around it. Thanks to the special construction techniques, the cathedral was amongst the few buildings which were not damaged.

Today, the temple hosts daily services for hundreds of Christians. And the cathedral itself bears the title of a unique historical monument, not only in Kazakhstan but throughout the world.

Kok Tobe TV Tower

The image features a tall TV tower against a backdrop of snow-covered mountains and a cloudy sky.The Kok Tobe TV Tower was built to perform clear technical tasks. But the elegant, unique architectural design and the height of the construction made it a symbol of Almaty.

The newest and most innovative construction methods of the time were used during its construction. Can you imagine that in order to ensure the stability of the 372-meter tower on clay soil, a concrete foundation weighing 45 thousand tons had to be built! Despite the fact that the total weight of the tower is 50 thousand tons.

Thanks to the pendulum damper system, the TV tower cannot be affected by any strong gusts of wind and has a high seismic stability up to 10 points on the Richter scale.

The Kok Tobe TV Tower is the second highest building in Kazakhstan, and the 14th highest TV tower in the world!

Beket Ata Underground Mosque

The photo shows an ancient monastery carved into rock, located in a desert landscape under a clear sky.Beket Ata Underground Mosque is located near the city of Aktau in the tract of Oglandy. The main architectural feature is that this mosque is carved into the rock. This is not just a cave, but a carved area of several completed rooms. The walls of the mosque are decorated with Arabic and Persian inscriptions.

The hermit Beket built four architectural monuments like this in Kazakhstan during his life. Every year, thousands of believers come to pray at the shrine.

5 unexpected reasons to visit Kazakhstan
18 октября 2021

Why is Kazakhstan worth visiting? Check out our list of reasons!

Kazakhstan – the motherland of tulips

The photo shows a colorful field of tulips and daffodils under a bright blue sky with clouds.You may be surprised to know that Kazakhstan is a motherland of tulips, not Netherlands. In comparison to the Netherlands, where people gather to see the annual show of these dainty beautiful flowers, tulips in Kazakhstan grow and bloom in the wild without human intervention and cover vast areas. Here you can see about 40 of 65 different types of wild tulips existing in Central Asia, and 18 of them have been listed as an endangered species. Shrenk’s and Greig’s tulips, considered as one of the most beautiful, are also amongst them.

From April to May scarlet orange and yellow flowers cover boundless fields and foothills of Jambyl, Turkistan and Almaty Provinces. You can observe these beautiful splashes of colors while travelling long-distance by highway from the south of Shymkent to Almaty. With the help of experienced tour guides that are there ready to help you locate the best spots to site see and explain the many species of tulips. Otrar is the best place for taking selfies

The image shows the ruins of an ancient fortress with round towers and a wooden bridge, located in a hilly, arid landscape, captured from a bird’s-eye view.Turkistan is often visited and is known by a number of pilgrims and travelers. There you can see one of the most majestic and medieval constructions in Kazakhstan, the mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi. But not many know that there is another amazing site - an ancient city of Otrar, which is on the way to Turkistan, if you are coming from Shymkent.

Scientists and archeologists have still been studying Otrar. Most of the ancient town’s construction has been restored and preserved. This is one of the few historical places in the country, where you can walk through ancient streets and capture some really interesting photos and a few selfies too.

If you want to get acquainted with this place, it is better to be prepared in advance – to get information from the internet, to watch the movie called “The death of Otrar” or you can order an excursion with a professional guide.

A black beach of Lake Alakol

The photo depicts a pebble beach with straw umbrellas and water transitioning from a brownish hue near the shore to turquoise on the horizon under a clear sky.If you are tired of the regular golden sandy beaches that are everywhere, then it’s high time to get acquainted with the black pebble beach of the Lake Alakol, which is in the south-west of Kazakhstan. The lake has not only an unusual coastline, but also healing powers as well. The black beach attracts people with common cold and skin diseases, nervous breakdown, and all those, who love meditations. Even Soviet cosmonauts used to come to the lake after their flights to get rehabilitated here.

Alakol Nature Reserve was established here to preserve rare types of birds, so you can find famous silver bass in its waters. If you come to the lake at the beginning of May, you can join the many bird watchers that come for the “Wings of Alakol” festival. This event attracts not only bird watchers but also journalists, yoga practitioners, and musicians. This is how a season on Alakol begins. Further is summer - a time of the sun, swimming and water entertainments. In autumn, there is another festival celebrated on the first weekends of September – “Okunkol”, where recreational fishermen catch the famous silver bass.

The first and the biggest cosmodrome

The image shows a rocket launching from a platform, surrounded by smoke and fire against a dark sky.You may be surprised to know that the world’s first and biggest cosmodrome is Baikonur, which is in the Kyzylorda Province of Kazakhstan. Till 2050, cosmodrome is leased to the Russian Federation, but legally is owned by Kazakhstan and tour companies of the country can organize tours to rocket and satellite launches. Don’t you want to visit the place, where the first successful flight to space was launched? Indulging in the atmosphere of the space center is worth visiting!

Delicious Kazakh cuisine

The photo shows a round table covered with traditional Eastern dishes: meat, flatbread, appetizers, and sweets.Another thing that you cannot ignore is a gastronomic delicacy of Kazakh cuisine. Many of you may find them surprisingly pleasant and quickly come to get an understanding of what we actually eat here in Kazakhstan. With that being said you should know that Kazakh people eat only healthy and natural food, and a lot of dairy products.

Nowadays, gastronomic tourism is becoming more and more popular in our country, and you won’t find such a variety of national cuisines and diverse flavors anywhere in the world. This is due to 135 nationalities that live in Kazakhstan. But the main highlight will always be the Kazakh cuisine that is based on the traditions of the Great steppes nomads. These delicious, healthy and “clever” food of the nomads are becoming very popular among travelers these days.

You can try famous Kazakh people dishes like beshbarmak (boiled meat with dough slices), baursaqs (fried puffy bread), qazy (horse meat sausage), irimshik (fat crumbly cottage cheese) in many cafes, and restaurants. But it will be more interesting to try national cuisine in the ethno-auls (villages). Guests are especially invited to try the many unique delicacies, which are made according to the recollected recipes. They will also demonstrate for you how these dishes are cooked and tell you the history in detail behind the legends and unusual stories about these dishes.

Welcome to beautiful and hospitable Kazakhstan – the modern country that preserved its ancient traditions!

18 октября 2021

Of course, there are much more places than just these twenty, which we will note in this article. This list will only help those who are traveling for the first time across the country. That is why we would like to list only the brightest pearls of our natural treasures that are located throughout several regions, combining those that are not far from each other into one.

We are more than sure that not every traveler, who have traveled around Kazakhstan many times or even those who live here since they were born, knows everything about beauty of the local nature and great variety of these parts. It is enough to say that many people couldn’t have named even a few attractions of this unbounded country without mentioning “steppe” or “mountain” used in a very broad sense. And there are lots of places! In order to thoroughly explore and enjoy each of them you will need many years and there is no need to even cross Kazakhstan’s border. Here you will find attractions from all six continents of the world: travelling to historical sites and ruins of ancient civilizations, resort vacation with so much fun, driving rally across the deserts and sand dunes, snow skiing and snowboarding at internationally recognized high-altitude resorts or mountain hiking in summer.

The true nature of Kazakhstan: Top 20 places

Akmola Province: Burabay and Korgaljyn

Burabay National Park (also known as Borovoe) and the lakes of the Korgaljyn Reserve are certainly the main natural attractions of Akmola Province.

Lake Borovoe surrounded by forests and mountains, with birds soaring in the clear sky.1. The forests and lakes of Burabay are an oasis in the middle of the surrounding steppes. Both northern and southern species of animals such as deer, elk, roe deer, etc, can be found here. In the forests, foxes, wolves and hares are often seen running about. And even if it’s not as often, you definitely will see them at some point! Also there are granite rocks of beautifully bizarre forms, as if they were carved by someone out of giant slabs to resemble these shapes. Almost everyone knows about its legend and their names. It is not surprising that this region has long been loved by both locals and foreign travelers, and a perfect new road directly from Astana provides easy access to there. It's just a 2 hour drive, a bit over 250 km, and you are there!

A wide plain with a lake and green reeds under a cloudy sky.2. To get to the Tengiz-Korgaljyn lake system is more difficult, because the road to there is much worse; but pink flamingos you can see there, makes the treacherous journey worth it! You just need to find the right form of transportation, off roaders in particular. Besides, you are also likely to meet with the steppe Saiga antelopes!

Irgiz-Turgay Nature Reserve in Aktobe Province

A saiga with an elongated nose walking across the green steppe under a clear sky.3. You can also watch Saigas of the Betpak Dala steppes in Irgiz-Turgay Nature Reserve in Aktobe Province. In particular, Irgiz-Turgay State Nature Reserve was set up to preserve and restore habitats and migration routes of Saiga. Also, the purpose of the reserve is to protect the unique wetlands of Irgiz-Turgay lake system as one of the places of the wetland birds’ highest concentration during seasonal migrations and fish spawning grounds. The lands of the reserve are included in the list of the International Union for Nature protection, as the wetlands is conserving the unique Water fowl and semi aquatic bird species. These far from civilization lands will be of great interest to naturalists.

Almaty Province: from mountain tops to desert dunes.

4. Nearby Almaty, the Big Almaty Lake is one lake you really need to visit, which belongs to the Ile Alatau National Park. There is a paved road, which almost reaches the shore of the lake making it very visited place. Even though sometimes there will be a lack of silence around to fully enjoy the view, do not take the lake off your list. Rare birds such as Sickle Bills still live here as well, and Edelweiss flowers grow on the slopes of the mountains.

A person in blue clothing stands by a mountain lake with transparent water among fir trees and snowy peaks.5. You can visit several interesting natural sites in the Altyn-Emel National Park. Aktau and Katutau Mountains and the famous “Singing Dune” are just a few of them. There are two sandy hills between the peaks of Big and Small Kalkan. The southern dune rises up to about 150 meters, the Northern – up to 100. The Park is located in the areas near the desert and mountains. About 80 species of mammals and 260 species of birds live here. Argali, Gazelles and Kulans peacefully coexist with each other in this habitat full of spacious plains and mountain slopes of Altyn-Emel. Moreover, the restoration of an endangered species – Przewalski’s horse has been progressing here well for more than ten years.

Green mountains covered with dense spruce forests under a blue sky.6. Turgen Gorge, is a place rich in waterfalls and streams, softwood and mixed forests, Alpine and subalpine meadows. The gorge stretches 44 kilometers deep into Asy Plateau (2560 meters in height). A walk to the waterfalls is very popular among travelers. The walking distance from the main road to the Medvezhiy Waterfall (also known as Bear Waterfall) is about a kilometer, and somewhere on the way, on the opposite slope of the gorge, you can get to see the Skalisti Waterfall. After walking further along the large Turgen River to the end of the waterfalls, you can continue the rest of your journey on four wheels. The asphalt road to Batan village ends when you reach the settlement, but the Asy Plateau would be waiting right ahead! After a long serpentine route there is this most wonderful view of the plateau. A spacious summer pasture ‘jailau’ with nomads’ yurt, stretches out to the East towards the Bartogay Reservoir, for 40 km, and in some places reaches up to 15 km in width. On your way to and from, you can see sheepherders’ yurts. And you can even visit them for a cup of hot aromatic tea.

A person sitting on a wooden pier by a clear mountain lake, surrounded by mountains and forest.7. Kolsay Lakes are located in the territory of the Kolsay Kolderi National Park, at a height of 1818, 2252 and 2850 meters above sea level. Kaindy Lake is located 12 km east of Kolsay Lakes and stretches out for 400 meters in length. You can visit the two lower Kolsay Lakes and Kaindy Lake in one weekend trip. Upper Kolsay (the third lake) is located about 4 km further from the second one and 600 m higher, and it requires a lot longer walk and better physique of the climber to accomplish this tedious trek. Kolsay is a great place for hiking, horse riding and mountain biking. Kaindy Lake appeared about a hundred years ago as a result of the collapse of a huge mass of rock that blocked the gorge by placing a natural dam. Dry fir trunks rise above the water surface like men on guard. The lake is surrounded by rocky slopes and steep cliffs on all sides, and you can only drive up to the water from one side.

Tall reddish-brown canyon cliffs against a blue sky.8. Charyn Canyon is one of the most interesting things about the nature encompassing the Almaty Province. The canyon is composed of sedimentary rocks, which can be dated back to about 12 million years! At sunset the walls of the canyon, made from large deposits of clay become red and shimmer with remarkably beautiful hues. The so-called “Castles Valley” is the most visited place by tourists. Charyn Canyon resembles The Grand Canyon in Texas, Colorado, in North America. Although it is inferior in size, the beauty of the “Castles Valley” is enchanting and unique. It will also be interesting to visit the Temirlik Canyon, where a grove of relic ash is preserved, as well as Uzunbulak Canyon (also known as Moon Canyon) and Kurtogay Canyon.

9. Bayankol River Valley is located at the base of the north most seven-thousander in the world, known as Khan Tengri. It has been long known amongst mountaineers. After all, Khan Tengri is a well-promoted brand. However, people who are not so into the world of professional sports can also find something to do and admire here. Other than mountaineers “Khan” also attracts mountain tourists. Every year, several hundred people make trips of varying difficulties to Terskey Alatau. There is also a unique opportunity to watch wildlife such as deer, ibex and argali in their natural habitat. Some lucky people even manage to get a glimpse of a snow leopard! The length of the Bayankol Gorge is 70 km. The source of the Bayankol River begins with glaciers flowing down from the Saryjaz Ridge. These are large glaciers of the Marble Wall: Bayankol and Western. The Bayankol River separates the Terskey Alatau ridge from the Central Tien Shan. It should be mentioned that there is a real summer pasture Jailau in the valley during the summertime, with many authentic yurts, where guests are always welcome!

10. Burkhan Bulak, the highest waterfall in Central Asia, in the Kora Gorge in the Jetysu Alatau Mountains (also known as Dzungarian), is also an object worth considering for travelers in Almaty Province. The height of all its visible cascades is about 112 meters, but it is not as easy to get there! And today the only way to get there is to go through the “Kapalsky izvoz” by a passable transport. Going down to the gorge and to the Kora River, and climbing it while returning from the pass is breathtaking. And there is only 12 km of dirt road on the bottom of the gorge to the waterfall. If you are lucky enough to become a member of the tour to the waterfall, you will not regret it, and all the discomforts of the treacherous road will later be remembered as an interesting adventure!

East Kazakhstan Province: The wonders of Altaiя

Snow-covered mountain peaks under a cloudy and blue sky.11. Belukha Mountain, the highest point of the Katun range and the highest point of Siberia, is one of the brightest sights of Kazakh Altai. The double peak has been attracting travelers, scientists, esotericists and mountaineers from all over the world since ancient times. The peaks have the form of irregular pyramids: Western (4435 m) and Eastern (4506 m). Belukha saddle is located right in between them, and stands 4000 meters in height. Russian pioneers gave the name Belukha to the mountain, because of the large snow covered peaks. But Kazakhs call the mountain Muztau, which means “Ice Mountain”. These days, travel companies organise various tours at the bottom of Belukha, such as hiking, horse riding and even helicopter drop-offs.

A mountain landscape with a lake, pine forest, snowy peaks, and a boat by the shore.12. Waterfalls and lakes of Katon-Karagay National Park.

Katon-Karagay National Park is the largest protected area in Kazakhstan. Ecosystems of the region have remained almost pristine due to their remoteness and inaccessibility to humans. The Altai Mountains include a variety of landscapes including swamps, forests, meadows and vast tundra. Kokkol Waterfall, the largest one in the East Kazakhstan, is the heritage of the park; with a height which is more than 50 meters. It is located in a very difficult passage near Belukha Mountain. You can get there either by walking or riding a horse. A tourists' trail near the waterfall is popular among travelers heading to the Berel glacier. Yazevy Waterfall is smaller than Kokkol, but its picturesque rocky shores, covered with soft moss and cranberries, will not leave you indifferent to its majestic beauty. Katon-Karagay has been famous for radon springs since ancient times. There are about 400 lakes in the area! And most of them are small with a minor area of up to one square km. The largest lake, Bukhtarma, is located at the headwaters of the Bukhtarma River at the upper border of the forest. The large Rakhmanov Lake is located very close to it. Three larger lakes - Karakol (Yazevoe), Chernovoe and Maraldy, are located on the Listvyaga Ridge. There are many fishes such as Ide and Graylings in the waters of these lakes.

13. Lake Markakol is another attraction of the East Kazakhstan Province which has long been loved by travelers. The lake is located on the territory of the Markakol Reserve between the Azutau ranges in the South and Kurchum in the North. The area is 455 sq km! Many small rivers and streams feed into the lake, and only the Kaljir River flows out. It is also not easy to get to Markakol; a long distance and lack of good roads make the trip a real adventure to overcome, but one which would be worthwhile! The water in the lake is clean and clear, greenish-blue in color, and very soft. And the transparency is a good 4-7 meters deep. Also Uskuch, an unusual fish of the salmon family, is found here.

14. Taiga places of Western Altai. West Altai Reserve is known far beyond the borders of Kazakhstan due to the stone outliers on the tops of the mountains at the junction of the three main ridges of the region, such as Koksu, Ivanovo and Kholzun. The place is called “Kamennaya Skazka”, which translates to Stone Fairytale. On an area of almost 16 square kilometers near the top of the Skazka (2179 m) granite outliers of bizarre shape rise like guardians, sometimes reaching a height of 35 meters! Many of them have their own names as Bogatyrs, Smotryaschiy, Beseda Startsev and others. Except outliers, highland lakes of Beluba attract a lot of attention with their uniqueness, and Kedrovoe Lake is considered to be the most beautiful of them all. The largest high-altitude swamp, Gulbische (six kilometers in length and two in width), a place of summer habitat for ungulate animals such as a roe deer, maral and elk, is located here in the Western Altai intermontane basin. It is also quite possible to meet the owner of the taiga! So, a photo shoot of the animal world, both birds and animals, is guaranteed to you here. The Black Uba River Valley, at the foot of Lyaminoe Belka, is no less of an interesting place to watch the taiga inhabitants from. There are even viewing decks organized for travelers. You can watch moose, deer and roe deer from a safe distance of 3-4 meters of height.

Orange-red clay hills against a yellow-green plain under a blue sky.15. Kiinkerish Tract. Unusual in its beauty, Kiinkerish Tract combines intricate red, white and yellow clay “structures”. From a distance, the bright clay cliffs and rocks of Kiinkerish look like tongues of flame. That’s why these rocks are called “Flaming rocks”. Travelers can still find the bones of ancient vertebrates (rhinos, crocodiles, turtles) here. Present forms of flora and fauna attract the attention of scientists, and that’s why they regularly organize scientific expeditions. A hot climate dominating here with the total lack of water creates a fantastically picturesque and mystical atmosphere.

Karaganda Province: Karkaraly National Park

A forest lake with low cliffs and pines under an overcast sky.16. A distinctive feature of Central Kazakhstan’s landscape is the local mountain ranges in the steppe and small-mound areas. Karkaraly National Park is the most famous, popular and accessible place for travelers. The relict pine forests are preserved here, and mountain lakes formed in the crater-like depressions of granite rocks are delighting the eye. Two lakes, Shaytankol and Basseyn, located close by Karkaraly have their own names and legends. More than a dozen other mountain lakes are located in the protected western part of the National Park and are as beautiful as the abovementioned lakes. The inaccessibility of the mountainous area is a good habitat for wild animals here, such as moose, roe deer, foxes, hares, etc. There are even Red Book argali!

Mangystau Province: “Gray-blue land” of Ustyurt and “Valley of the Balls”

White chalk cliffs in the middle of a desert plateau with a view to the horizon.17. When going to Ustyurt you should bear in mind that there are very long distances, unpredictable weather conditions and lack of accessibility of drinking water on the road. If you want to go there it should be when the weather is dry, because as soon as it starts to rain, it will be impossible to reach the destination. There are a lot of natural attractions in Mangystau, the two main ones are Bozjyra (also spelled as Boszhira, direct translation from the Kazakh language is “Gray-blue land”), a spectacular outlining mountain range, perfect for photo shoots is located on the outskirts of the Western chink of Ustyurt. Valley of the Balls” is where you will find huge ball noodles formed millions of years ago at the bottom of the ancient ocean.

Pavlodar Province: Bayanaul Mountain

A green valley with forests and hills, surrounded by mountains and a lake in the distance.18. Bayanaul, a mountain forest oasis, hundred kilometers from Ekibastuz, is the main natural attraction of Pavlodar Province in the North East of Kazakhstan. Bizarre cliffs, picturesque freshwater lakes; the largest of which are Sabyndykol, Jasybai, Toraigyr and Byrjankol; mysterious caves and grottoes, and most importantly, the distance from big cities, make this region attractive for ecotourists. In 1985 the Bayanaul National Park was formed here. 50 of the 460 species of plants growing in the Park are relict: including Bayanaul pine and stone currant.

Oasis in the North of Kazakhstan

A night ski resort with ski lifts and an illuminated building.19. Imantau-Shalkar Resort Area of the North Kazakhstan Province. One of the most interesting and insufficiently known regions is certainly Imantau-Shalkar Resort Area of the North Kazakhstan Province, where you can find beautiful lakes and winter outdoor activities. The region holds the first place by the number of lakes in the country; and the second by the number of forests and the third by the length of roads. Picturesque nature, represented by steep hills with bizarre sculptures of mountains-outliers and hollows of lakes, a combination of forest-steppe vegetation and pine forests, makes the Northern region of Kazakhstan attractive for travelers.

Turkistan Province: Aksu-Jabagly, the oldest reserve of the country

A mountain lake at the foot of snowy peaks, surrounded by steep slopes and greenery.20. Aksu-Jabagly Nature Reserveis one of the oldest in Central Asia. First ornithological tours and tours for botanists, interested in tulips, began to be organized in this reserve and near it. No wonder, Grieg's Tulip is an emblem of the reserve! As for the birds, there are 130 species of birds nesting here, 11 of which are listed in the Red Book. The reserve is located in the Talas Alatau Mountains in the Western Tien Shan. Aksu Canyon occupies the central part of the Reserve with a depth of about 1800 m. You can take a walk or ride a horse there.

10 must-see landscapes in Kazakhstan

Breathtaking places in Kazakhstan that everyone should visit at least once

All these are accompanied by incredibly picturesque landscapes that will make even the most pessimistic tourist sauvore their charm. So, in this article we have prepared ten unique sites in Kazakhstan that looks like they stepped out from the paintings of great artists. Here you can make beautiful photos; therefore, if you have any type of camera it will be working hard throughout your whole journey.

Kaindy Lake

A quiet lake with green water and submerged trees among coniferous forest.

Looking through your photos won’t give you even a one tenth of all impressions that you will receive while gazing the lake. It is a wonderful place, as much unique as its historical background. At first sight, it may seem that it is very ancient and appeared as a result of lithosphere plates’ movement. But that is not true! Kaindy Lake has proved to be one of the youngest lakes in Kazakhstan made not with human hands. It appeared only 100 years ago, when a huge landslide in 1910 had blocked a gorge. Gradually, a crystal-like pure water filled in a reservoir overflowing a coniferous forest that was growing there. It is surprisingly, but wooden branches are still there…under the water! As for the wooden trunks overtop, these all became bare and lonely stick out of the water like spares. These trunks are called Guardians. The water is of deep blue color and quite often changes its ton from emerald to azure-blue. However, if you come up closer you will be surprised by its crystal-like pureness, so you can watch the underwater world of the lake through it in its full splendor. In case you enjoy diving then you will definitely see its true value.

Need to know: the lake is located 288 km far from Almaty nearby Saty village. To be more precise, the last 12 km on your way from the village to the lake you will have to pass through difficult terrain, however, very picturesque! Be prepared to pay ecological fee because the Lake Kaindy and the birch trees surrounding the lake have become a part of the national park since 2007. It is very cold to swim as the temperature of the water is no more than + 6 °С. Instead, the temperature of the air is very favourable – stays at +23 °С level. In Saty village you may stay overnight provided with all facilities. Also the touristic infrastructure is quite developed here, if you wish you may travel to the lake without arranging accommodation and means of transport well in advance of the trip.

Burabay is a true paradise for travelers

Lake Borovoe among forests and mountains with birds against a clear sky.

Frequently, we don’t see all that beauty that could have been unveiled for us if we stayed a bit higher or had wings to fly. However, Burabay (also known as Borovoe) is still amazing because we can enjoy its beauty from a bird’s perspective without bird’s assistance or private helicopter. It is sufficient to climb the Bolektau Mountain and you will find yourself at the wonderful observation deck of 147 meters of height. The deck offers a spectacular view on all natural sites of the area: Burabay Lake and Big Chebachye Lake, Jumbaktas and Okjetpes Rocks and the Blue Bay. The view is so stunning that one may forget where he or she is at the moment – it is unbelievable that such beauty has always been nearby but we even didn’t guess about that.

Many travelers, who have never been to Burabay, are always surprised at first: how it happened that in the middle of the vast and unbounded steppe there is a miracle that people talk so much about? And then they stand still when discover huge mountains appearing out of nowhere covered with thick woods, lakes and a bunch of stones. It is all arranged in such a way so you could enjoy your vacations exactly in the manner you have imagined: there are lakes with pure cool water, resorts with spa and massage rooms – for those who enjoy laying on the beach; there are horseback riding, climbing famous mountains like Bolektau, Sinyukha, Okjetpes, walks into the forests to look for mushrooms and berries, and many more – for those who like active vacations.

And now it is time to tell you how to make best photos.

Need to know: if you decide to climb Bolektau alone without a tour group (this is quite good as on your way you will hear many interesting legends about original background of this area), by taking your own course, then you will need several things. Do not be afraid of driving a car to reach the mountain because at its foothill there are several parking places, both with and without any charge. You may ask directions from any local or check your map so, believe me, you won’t be wandering around. The uphill climbing is not so difficult but it is worth to wear comfortable shoes and clothes that would cover you properly. Be aware that it is dangerous to climb right after it has rained or in uncertain weather.

Bozjyra: a piece of the Moon on Earth

Desert area with expressive rock formations under a blue sky.

On the Internet you will see lots of images of this place that attracts travelers from all over the world aspiring to touch the local wonder of severe nature. It feels like the nature, in an attempt to apologize for aridity and monotony of the steppe plains, has created this island of incredible beauty and painted it in gentle light-grey, white and beige colours.

Long time ago the Ustyurt Plateau was fully covered with water. The waters of Tethys – an ancient ocean that existed 10 million years ago – were raging there. This is the ocean that had become a progenitor of all seas and oceans of nowadays. In comparison with the Tethys, its depth, all of them would seem to us as little lakes only. But under the effect of climate and relief changes, the ocean started receding washing out soft limestone with its huge waves. The sun and the wind had accomplished that process by sealing off the yielding rock into fantastic shapes: you can recognize castles, towers, sharp spears, lengthy canyons, and even yurts. A special feature of the place is two strong peaks of limestone (more than 200 meters in height each) that in their shape remind of fangs of a predator. If you have sufficient time and your eyesight is good enough you may find petrified shells at the bottom of the canyon (of quite interesting shapes); and the luckiest ones will find fragments of prehistoric sharks’ bones or even teeth.

Need to know: the Bozjyra Tract is located 300 km away from the city of Aktau and you can reach it in two ways. The first way is driving mighty off-road vehicles because there is no road at the approaches to the valley. However, if one knows the area then it is possible to reach a natural observation site that offers a stunning view to cosmic landscape of Bozjyra. The second way is to ask a travel company to arrange a tour for you across Mangystau, and, while you are about it, you may visit underground mosques of Shopan Ata and Beket Ata as well as safari in Tuiyesu Sands. But be prepared that the tour may cost up to 100,000 tenge for 3-4 persons. However, all impressions are worth it!

Rakhmanovskiye Klyuchi Resort (Rakhman Springs Resort)

A wooden gazebo by a lake in a mountain forest; two boats sail on the water.

In the heart of the Altai Mountains, which is almost 200 meters above sea level, there is a stunning view on sacred Belukha Mountain (the highest peak of the Altai Mountains), Arasan Cascade Waterfall, and hot springs under the sky – this is a paradise on the earth, isn’t it? Such beauty is worth visiting. But Rakhman Springs Resort attracts all travelers with many more: it is an ideal place not only for observing the nature but also for emproving human’s health. There you may enjoy fantastic views of carefully protected pristine wilderness while, at the same time, improving your health and restoring your vitality resources.

This is a true balneotherapeutic health resort that has been attracting people from all over the world for centuries who aspire to cure their skin and heart diseases, to regulate blood pressure and central nervous system, to weaken impact of seasonal allergy. Moreover, local radon springs are of such a balanced composition that are suitable for almost every one; the variety of springs’ water temperature, from 24°С and higher, allows to use the most relevant spring for certain type of disease.

A wooden pier stretches into a mountain lake against a sunset sky and mountains.

After having rest in that area for a long time afterwards you will still remember its beauty and magical peaceful impact of local nature: majestic Altai cedars, that have been growing on the mountain slopes for hundreds of centuries, enrich the air with delicate pine scent; mountain ranges sparkling with their sugar tops; the purest Rakhmanov Lake shining in the sunlight with its exceptionally smooth surface… What a grace!

Need to know: it is quite difficult to reach the resort area or health resort hotel if you don’t have an off-road vehicle. The route is clearly defined on the map but you will have to travel through difficult terrain. If you are going to stay at the health resort hotel then, possibly, you will be provided with a private bus – such option is the most convenient, indeed. In addition to the treatment procedures, you can enjoy active vacation: mountain climbing, going to waterfalls, horseback riding, walking on a tour, boating, skiing and snowboarding in winter.

Korgaljyn Lakes

A pink flamingo by the water's edge with a ring on its leg.

It is very unexpectedly, isn’t it? Pink flamingos (and even curly pelicans) in Kazakhstan… This is exotic! You can see it at its best and in natural habitat on the territory of Korgaljyn Nature Reserve. Apart from those wonderful birds, there are hundreds species of other feathered creatures, because this is a meeting point for two birds’ migration routes: Central Asian and Siberian-South European. During migration period the water area of two interconnected lakes (Korgaljyn and Teniz Lakes) is full of various and rare species of birds that you will never meet anywhere except vast steppes of our country. This place is may really be considered as the most beautiful and unique in the whole Eurasia. The area is especially beautiful when in April the water surface is covered with a flower carpet of Shrenk tulips marked in the Red Book. One of the surprising features of the region is salty composition of Teniz Lake water – you can easily lie on your back and read a book without fear of drowning. Korgaljyn Lake, on the contrary, has fresh water with amazing landscape: cane divided the whole lake into separate bay-lakes and each of them has got its own name. Photos of the region look like being captured in line with the National Geographic project: distinctive, colorfully rich and shining with beauty of undisturbed nature.

Need to know: you need to obtain a special permission to get on the territory of the national park and you will be accompanied by the staff. It is very convenient to let special ecological tour agents to arrange a trip for you (between May and October) and travel across the national park either on your off-road vehicle or on a bus provided by the administration. If you firmly intend to travel on your own then please do it on an off-road vehicle – the steppe roads are highly dusty, rocky in some parts, and washed-away in other parts. Ecological fee is equal to 300 tenge, guide service costs around 15,000 tenge. There are also various complex tours which include visiting several touristic places in one go, walking and so on.

Aktau colourful mountains and the Singing Dune

Snowy mountains reflected in the mirror-like surface of the lake under a bright sky.A pearl of Altyn-Emel National Park is proved to be amazing Aktau Mountains. Yes, in Kazakh that means “white mountain”, but such mixed landscape seems to be of white color only at the distant look. The nearer you approach the brighter their colours are supplemented by sparkling crystals of calcite in various fantastic forms – all these create an incredible image. When the mountains are lightened up with mild orange-red sunset rays, the photos are especially magical, so all travelers make photos at that time.

A person with a backpack walking along the ridge of a sand dune in the desert.But that’s not all! If Aktau is a pearl, then Akkum-Kalkan (the Singing Dune) is a diamond. It is on the list of top 7 new wonders of the nature because it … sings! Yes, even a light gust of the wind blowing sand particles off the top makes the Dune to sound like a melody played by organ. And photos at the sunset background are stunning here!

Need to know: it is possible to reach this destination only on an off-road vehicle because adequate road leads only to Nurum and Aktobe villages, after that only dusty steppe road is available. Be prepared that the dust and the sand will follow you everywhere. After a long journey you may wash up in a healing radon spring in Kosbastau natural boundary and then to continue your journey into the depth of mountain ranges further ahead for several kilometers. It is better to visit the Singing Dune within a tour group as the tour cost covers all expenses like fee, guide service, meals and so on.

Sacred three-headed Altai mountain Belukha

A salt lake with white deposits at the shore among sand dunes under a blue sky.

Belukha… It is a residence of Umay Goddess, a place of cosmic energy, snow-white witness of the past and a warranter of the future – all these epithets were assigned to the highest Altay mountain for a reason. Over many centuries various peoples of Kazakhstan, Russia, Mongolia, and China connected many legends, religious stories, mystery with the Mountain Belukha. Even now, when you look at the snow-white tops, this view makes you shiver and then, all of a sudden, you start seeing images of the past. One of the best views of the mountain is from Yazevoe Lake. You can also reach Kokkol Waterfall to enjoy its raging flows of water falling down from the top and make a photo of distantly sparkling sugar tops of Belukha.

Need to know: If you are not a professional mountaineer and do not know local places, then do not climb the mountains on your own. Firstly, you will face such difficulties as absence of the road, absence of network connection, absence of any road markers (except Belukha peaks) and people dwellings. Secondly, there is no point in facing those difficulties when there are perfectly organized routes specially designed in a comfortable for travelers way with picturesque places and an opportunity to take wonderful photos.

Charyn Canyon

A deep canyon with high cliffs and a narrow path under a cloudy sky.

In the spurs of Tien Shan Mountains there is one of the most amazing creations of the nature – Charyn Canyon formed out of sedimentary rocks aged up to 12 million years! It is considered to be the second lengthy and biggest canyon in the world! It is second only to the Grand Canyon but is capable to compete with it in its beauty. For over thousands of years the wind, the water, and the soil had been forming fantastic stone sculptures, had been carving gorges and caves and had finally created such design that we can enjoy nowadays. Photos are fantastic from any location of the canyon. However, if one goes down to the bottom of the canyon, he or she will get the most impressive photos. Especially, if one manages to catch sunset rays that paint stone sides of Charyn Canyon into scarlet color.

Need to know: it is desirable to have this trip either in spring or in autumn, before summer heat (the rocks are heated and the air turns into thick so it becomes hard to breathe) spoils the trip. You can reach the destination by using your car, taking a bus from Almaty or using tour transport. If you want to reach canyon’s bottom, then make sure you drive an off-road vehicle because while going down many vehicles “catch” diagonal hanging and one of its wheels hangs in the air. The city break destinations are the most popular: organizers will take you there, show you best observation decks, a legendary relic ashwood forest. There are only two ashwood forests in the whole world! The ashwood forest has been existing there before the Ice Age and had managed to survive in the epoch of the great cold. There are local restaurants to have a lunch. However, we would recommend taking food with you as it might be expensive to eat in the restaurants.

Kolsay Lakes

Autumn landscape: a mountain lake reflecting the sky and yellow leaves in the foreground.

Kolsay Lakes, like a necklace made out of azure stone, decorate already beautiful northern slopes of majestic Tien Shan Mountains. All in all there are three lakes: Lower, Middle, and Upper Kolsay Lakes. The first lake has the coldest water and it is located in the depth of the gorge that’s why it is rather lengthy. The middle one is the most beautiful and big with its incredibly picturesque banks full of flowers; it is surrounded by the peaks forested with coniferous woods. The third lake is the smallest one but it is very cosy – it looks like the lake has hidden from the outer world under the rocks protection taking care of its crystal-like pure water with reflection of a quaint bushy juniper forest on the water surface. All photos taken next to any of these lakes are perfect and every time different: the water is frequently changing its color from azure to malachite, and then enriching itself with turquoise or even dense blue color.

Need to know: you can drive a car to get to the fist lake; it is important to pay an entrance fee to enter the territory and ecological fee (200 tenge per car and 650 tenge per person). Further ahead you will need to walk uphill – there is a thin rocky path leading to the second lake – the view will make you forget about all difficulties. There is a hotel in the area on the river bank where you can comfortably live in. Otherwise, there is a cheaper option in the cosy houses in Saty village. It is even possible to pitch a tent not far from the second and the third lakes and it will cost only 500 tenge.

Inder Lake

A salt lake with white deposits at the shore among sand dunes under a blue sky.

There is one more lake, where it is impossible to drown, which is located 180 kilometers away from Atyrau and is called Inder (local name is Tuzdykol – salty lake). It is fed with mighty underground springs carrying salts of high quality out of the earth depths: potassium, boron, bromine as well as sodium chloride, iodine, magnesium. It is needless to say how it is useful to have a mud bath and wash up in such water. All local habitants have been feeling positive effect of salty water for skin and body in general – such water pulls out toxins, disinfects even the slightest wounds, and heals skin diseases. Inder is famous not only for its healing capacities: show-white sparkling surface and shimmering salt crystals on its bank make the lake the Mecca for photographers.

Need to know: you can make your own way (180 km of walking on the pavement and around 20 km of walking along the country road) or within a health improving tour that are offered by local businessmen. There are tents pitched on the bank so you will have all facilities to relax after mud baths and bathing. You should bear in mind that it is not safe to stay in the mud bath for more than 20 minutes otherwise you will be hyper salinated and your skin will be dried out.

Kazakhstan: Landscapes from a different Planet

These lunar-like lands will inspire wanderlust in every traveler. The expeditions and short trips to this lovely locations are also referred to as “the other planets.” These trips should be thoroughly planned so that you can have the most memorable time in Kazakhstan. Here you will not find too many road signs, and the roads themselves are far from perfect; also one very important aspect is that there is no drinking water for tens, or possibly even hundreds of kilometers around! With such great difficulties like trying to find these stunning sites off the beaten path and the lack of water has not deterred people (especially foreigners) from these adventures. For some strange reason every year more and more people are visiting these beautiful attractions. Difficulties do not stop searchers of unexplored paths and new adventures! Let’s talk about the best “alien” landscapes in more details.

Martian Landscapes

Steppe with bright multicolored rocks against a blue sky with clouds.

Kiinkerish Tract, a natural landmark in Eastern Kazakhstan, the Akjar Mountains near Karaganda, and the Aktau Mountains in Altyn-Emel National Park, which is located in the Almaty Province, can easily be categorized as Martian land. If you are looking at Mars (also known as the Red Planet) when it is at its closest to the Earth it will look like a big red star. Red, almost rubiginous, colour of Mars, becomes quite obvious on the photos made by space modules. But in fact the planet’s surface is covered in rust, as it contains a lot of ferrous oxide – scientists say. Our planet’s red landscapes are of various shades, dark yellow to bright red, sometimes purple from the soil composition. For example, the Akjar Mountains are located on the border of Karaganda and Kostanay Provinces. Here in this region there are colors of purple that appear to be a mixture of gypsum and clay with amethyst dust. It is such a spectacular view! And the photos are perfect! You will definitely get a lot of likes on any webpage that you post these pictures on!

If you want to go there you must get a local guide who knows all the possible routes because only special transport will get you to your destination. Travelers won’t see or find any signs to guide you!

Orange clay hills in the foreground and a yellow-brown plain stretching to the horizon.

Kiinkerish Tract in Eastern Kazakhstan is situated pretty far from civilization, roughly 120 kilometers from Kurchum and 300 kilometers from the city of Ust-Kamenogorsk. Mineralized fills of mottled (mainly red) clay are washed out by the water and blown by the wind to make a bright and fantastic landscape. Scientists say that this area was formed by the tropical conditions of heat and humidity of the Mezozoic Era, this is when the dinosaurs roamed the planet.

It is recommended that you travel with a local guide and that the best time to visit is during the dry season in the summer. It is also not recommended to stay overnight at Kiinkerish. Two hours of walking should be enough to have a tour around Kiinkerish and have a few fantastic selfies while on your adventure. After your journey through Kiin-Kerish, you can see Zaisan Lake, which lies like an oasis in the East of Kazakhstan. Then there is the natural monument Shekelmes which is a mini version of Kiinkerish. Here you will find many caves and clay labyrinths that you can explore. This is the perfect place to set up a campsite on the sandy shores of Zaisan Lake.

Striped hills of red and yellow rocks with shrubs under a blue sky.Altyn-Emel National Park in the Almaty Province has its own piece of “Mars” – this is the Aktau Mountains. “The Aktau Mountains are very unique with their stratigraphic sequences (i.e. sequence of layers of the subsurface rock), which can be seen from space. These layers allow us to study the evolution of the whole Earth on its basis. In addition to this, there is another natural treasure that is hidden deep in the Aktau Mountains. This buried gem is invisible to travelers and visitors, but not to the guides that know the terrain. Here you can find the ancient fossils of animals that had lived in the region more than 50 million years ago. The remains of these animals’ bones are now on display in the visitors center of the National Park; and travelers and guests can also see these bones while on the tour through the Aktau Mountains,” – Rustam Khabibrakhmanov, the head of Altyn-Emel National Park’s Department of Science, Information and Monitoring, has written this in one of his works. On your journey through the park you will be accompanied by an experienced guide that can inform you about all of the many interesting things about the picturesque relief of the Aktau Mountains and the other wonders that reside in Altyn-Emel National Park. And since you are already in the area you should take a short ride to the Katutau Mountains. These mountains may lack the strange Mars like color like that of the Aktau Mountains, but their beauty and attraction lies in their strange shape, and this will definitely blow your mind.

Blue Uranium Landscapes

A girl in a light dress posing at the edge of a white cliff above a salt desert under a clear sky.

When comparing colors of the planets in our solar system, it is without a doubt that Bozjyra (also spelled as Boszhira) and its surrounding landscape on the Ustyurt Plateau has a very similar terrain like that of the planet Uranus. Through a telescope Uranus is seen as a sky-blue planet, the blue color is a result of red beam absorption by atmospheric methane. With its distant location from the sun, the planet receives 140 times less of the sun’s energy and 400 times less of the sunlight than what our earth receives. That is why the temperature on Uranus’ surface is unbelievably low, dipping down to minus 208 to 212 degrees Celsius. This is why this great blue planet is known as the Icy Giant.

On Ustyurt Plateau in the Mangystau Province you won’t feel any of this minus 208 degrees of icy cold except crosswinds that blow from every angle; but visually you will definitely notice the similarities between these two. Actually, Bozjyra in Kazakh means Grey Blue Earth (lacuna), and in the daytime it looks like it is in a grey blue haze.

What really catches your eye in the photos of Bozjyra, are the two limestone peaks called Fangs, because of their shape. They stand over 200 meters in height, and from a narrow “observing deck” (that only the local guides know about) you can see a gorgeous view of the castles in Bozzhyra as the valley opens up to you. You can also use drones to capture all of these wonderful images and videos.

In order to get to Bozjyra, you must travel several hundred kilometers along *takyr – this is a special kind of soil that is formed of salty soils in the desert and semi-deserts. When this “takyr” is dry it then forms a very solid and even surface on the ground. This is why in the dry season in the desert the ground will allow race cars to speed on its surface like asphalt. But once this surface sees any rain you may find yourself in very different circumstances.

On your way from Aktau to Bozjyra you will encounter another strange and interesting “alien-like object.” This is the lost mountain of Bokty, standing at a 160 meters high, this symmetrical mountain from various angles some say looks like a trapeze while other may say a triangle. There are 37 kilometers between Bokty and Bozjyra (and 298 kilometers between Aktau and Bozjyra).

Large round rocks in the desert foreground and hills on the horizon.Another great traveling site that we highly recommend, also located on the Ustyurt Plateau, is the Valley of Balls in Torysh.

Despite its distance from civilization, the Valley of Balls somehow manages to attract travelers from all over with its mystery. People with their own eyes want to see the huge round stones strewn throughout this steppe region. The scientific term for the formation of these balls is called “concretion.”

Scientist are to this day still puzzled about the derivation of the Balls; perhaps, this is somehow in connection with the deep-water currents of the ancient ocean? Or maybe it is just a trick from an alien species from outer space, who knows? Anyway there is something really mystical about these places that we would like you to experience!

Snow-White Mountains of Aktolagay

The Aktobe Province also has its own outer planet landscapes – this is a chalky plateau by the name of Aktolagay. This is a must-visit location, here you can find real ancient sharks' teeth! Aktolagay Plateau is spread out through the south to the north in the Aktobe Province. A part of the mountain ridges are located in the Atyrau Province. Also at this site you find the Emba River flowing from the west running parallel to Aktolagay. On the one side of Aktolagay is the edge of the Alshynsay sands and on the other side is the Togalay sands.

Scientists and travelers from all over the world come to the southern slopes of Aktolagay, to see and observe the chalky walls rise from the bottom to the top, many meters in rising and changing over to snow-white sloping hills. This hills display colorful layers of Palaegogonic rocks which are dark in these layers; beige, green, grey, and brown with a shelly limestone to top off this rock layer. Today, the Southern Aktolagay Plateau is a geological and geomorphological (i.e. related forms of relief) site of the State Wildlife Sanctuary of Republican and International Importance.

Bektau Ata Pink Granite Mountain

Light brown cliffs with a small water body among mountains under a cloudy sky.

Another set of colors coming from an unusual natural formation, which is located, roughly 70 kilometers from the town of Balkhash. This place is called Bektau Ata, and is a one-of-a-kind natural site in the opinions of many astronomers. Imagine a granite mountain, standing in the middle of Balkhash Lake’s steppe area, now add pleasant pink to this mountain. Even the drivers passing by on the Almaty-Karaganda highway, do not know about the beauty that is hidden among the visible mountain peaks. Here you can see that there are woods growing among the granite rocks, lakes and mystical caves, too. This place is more like a get-away or hiding spot than a far off galactic location.

This mountain is called by the locals, “the Mountain of the Holy Elder Bek,” who lived in a cave on the top of the Bektau Ata Mountain.

Red, white, pink, and blue landscapes of Kazakhstan will not allow you to stay indifferent! Before you make a journey be sure that you stock up on drinking water, and charge your digital devices to the fullest. May the sun be on your face and the winds on your back, and live the adventures that you want to have!

The Land of Waterfalls: Katon-Karagay National Park

This area is famous for its valleys, mountains, rivers, lakes, and of course, for its picturesque waterfalls.

Yazev Waterfall

A fast mountain stream flowing between rocks in a dense forest.You can see beautiful Belukha Mountain from the coasts of Karakol Lake, also known as Yazevoe, which got a name from ide fish found in its water. This lake is in a valley that sits at a height of 1656 m above sea level, where according to scientists, Katun glaciers left moraines, which later were washed out by the river. In these 5 kilometers to the lake you can take the picturesque route among 20-25 m high and 100 year old trees. Here you will reach the Yazev waterfall, this waterfall actually has almost a countless number of drains. In total there are about 10 cascades, that drop from a height of up to 10-12 m. Fishermen have a chance to get an elegant grayling in the rushing flood water, just a little down the waterfall.

Arasan Waterfall

A waterfall flowing from dark cliffs into a lake among forest.Belukha Mountain, ‘the double-headed beauty’, can also be seen from the hiking route from Rakhman Springs Resort (Rakhmanovskiye Klyuchi Resort), in the Valley of Arasan River. You won’t get lost, because there is the only road that heads to the south west of Arasan Lake and then towards the Berel village. Considering there is good weather, Belukha Mountain is seen from at least three kilometers from the viewing platform that is equipped with a gazebo and information stand. If you head just one more kilometer you will find the Arasan Waterfall. Near the road there is a steep path equipped with wooden ramps that leads to the waterfall. 5-6 meter waterfalls are divided in its center by a small rock, which makes it look like a mustache. That’s why tourists gave it second name “Batyr’s mustache”, i.e. a mustache of a hero. Unfortunately, there was a fire in 2007 that damaged this beautiful place, but it is being gradually restored.

Rakhmanov’s Waterfall or “Hairs of Veronika”.

A tall waterfall cascading from a cliff among rocks and green slopes under the sky.Not far from Rakhman Springs Resort, in the Arasan Valley there is Rakhmanov’s waterfall, which is also poetically called the “Hairs of Veronika”. It is formed from a stream, that starts in a small high mountain morainic lake (2265 m above sea level) and joins to form the Rakhamov Lake. To get there, travelers can take the following route: to take a boat to reach the opposite side of Rakhmanov’s lake and to hike to the waterfall along the wooden ramps that make the path. The path is 4 kilometers in length and it goes through the forest to a viewing platform, where you can enjoy a beautiful view of the “Hairs of Veronika”. The water falls from a height of about 30 meters: narrow streams flow between sheer and shaly cliffs in this three-stepped cascade.

Piala Waterfall

This waterfall stands at a height of 2370 meters above sea level, and in order to get here you should register with a tour group, which goes by “Sarymsakty” route (about 22 km one-way in distance) in the Katon-Karagay Park. The path goes along the Sarymsak River through a beautiful cedar forest until you reach the Kyzylkum passage on the rocky horse road. In the cedar forests, you can see chipmunks, squirrels, Altai pikas and birds like nutcrackers, jays and owls. Frequent visitors of the cedar forests are wild boars and bears – the lovers of a pine nut.

At about the midpoint of the main route, there is a start for three radial trekking routes. The first goes to Toktagul mountain area and the cascades of the following lakes: Verkhneye - Maralenok – Karlygash. The second is to Turpan Lake. And the third goes to Piala Waterfall. This waterfall is not very big, it is only about 5-6 meters high, but it makes up for its size in beauty with its very picturesque backdrop. Mountain river cascades down to a small round shaped lake (similar to the shape of Piala, i.e. a tea bowl), then flows out about one kilometer to only fall into the Sarymsak river. The rumbling water can be heard long before you approach the waterfall.

The main string of the route then stretches along the Valley of Sarymsak River.

As stated above, there are many picturesque, but nameless waterfalls in this area, like the waterfall close to the Belkaragai village, and then there is a beautiful cascading waterfall close to “Yasnaya Polyana” – both are worth mentioning. Anywhere you go in Katon-Karagay national park the local people can organize an excursion for you to go and see the many waterfalls there. We can assure you they will be wherever you are, so make sure you ask them. But if you plan your tour through a huge territory of this park properly, you should definitely do it with the tour operators of Kazakhstan. They can give you the best deal with the beautiful hidden sites that only Kazakhs know about!

There are 113 minerals types registered by the state in the country.

Capacity for new discoveries

Despite the large number of deposits already being developed, experts believe that the subsoil of Kazakhstan retains significant capacity for new discoveries. One of the most promising areas is geological exploration of solid minerals. Particularly large prospects are associated with gold ore deposits. Most of these deposits are concentrated in the third part of the Kostanay region, in the central and eastern parts of Kazakhstan, as well as in the south, near the border with Kyrgyzstan.

State geological exploration program

In response to the need for the development of geological exploration, on the instructions of the Head of State, the State Geological Exploration Program of the Republic of Kazakhstan for 2021–2025 was developed. The main program objective is to increase geological exploration of the country's territory, which will ensure the stable development of geological exploration and replenishment of mineral resource base.

The program includes the study of “deep horizons” in mining areas, and its implementation has been carried out through the state budget and private investment.

Investment Opportunities and Financing

Investors are interested in areas that have already undergone preliminary geological study. For this purpose, the state finances the early stages of geological exploration, which significantly increases the investment capacity of areas that are transferred to subsoil use. This allows for the acceleration of the processes of extraction and development of natural resources.

Digitalization in geological exploration

Within the framework of the state program Digital Kazakhstan a project is being implemented to create and implement the information system "National Mineral Resources Database of the Republic of Kazakhstan" (NMRDB). The system will collect geological reports, balances of mineral reserves, deposit passports and other important information in a single database.

One of the key tasks of the NMRBD is the introduction of the "single window" principle, which will simplify the access of investors and subsoil users to subsoil use processes. The introduction of this system will also automate processes such as issuing licenses, providing reports and monitoring the fulfillment of obligations.

New code and legislation

In 2018, the new Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan "On Subsoil and Subsoil Use" came into force, which is fully consistent with the best international practice, in particular the Western Australian model. This code opens up new opportunities in geological exploration, and is also aimed at attracting investors, including junior companies, which, as world practice has shown, discover more than 60% of new deposits.

Kazakhstan continues to actively develop its geological exploration and subsoil use industries, which creates prospects for new discoveries and expansion of mineral extraction. The introduction of modern technologies and legislative changes, as well as the active attraction of investors, contribute to the sustainable development of the country's mineral resource base.

To stimulate the growth of the tourism industry in Kazakhstan, in 2019 the state program for tourism development for 2019–2025 was approved. The program is aimed at creating favorable conditions for tourism development in the country, including strategic planning and reducing barriers for investors. The objective of the program is to increase the share of tourism in Kazakhstan's total GDP to 8% by 2025.

The Future of Ecotourism

According to forecasts from the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), ecotourism will develop rapidly in the next two decades. Global spending on ecotourism will grow faster than on the entire tourism industry as a whole, which opens up significant opportunities for Kazakhstan, which has unique natural resources.

Tourist attractions of Kazakhstan

Currently, there are more than 100 tourist sites in Kazakhstan , the so-called "tourist magnets" and "tourist growth points". In order to further attract investment in the development of these sites, a map of Kazakhstan's tourism was developed, which highlights the most promising places for tourist attractiveness and infrastructure development.

Thus, tourism in Kazakhstan has enormous capacity, and the implementation of the state tourism development program will allow the country to strengthen its position in the global tourism market, attracting an increasing number of tourists from all over the world.

Running a Business: Where to Start?

Business meeting: one person shows graphs and diagrams on paper, the other holds a tablet.Starting a business from scratch is quite possible. But where exactly should you start, and where can you get money to start?

Defining a niche

The first step is to choose the direction: goods or services. Today, not only finished products are in demand, but also personal knowledge, skills, talents and experience. It is important to focus on the own strengths.

For example:

  • A teacher can open an educational center.
  • Accountant – offer accounting and auditing services.

It is also worth studying the market:

  • What are the needs of potential customers?
  • Who are your competitors and what services do they offer?
  • How can you stand out and offer something new?

If there is no coffee shop in your area, for example, you could invest in a coffee machine and offer barista services.

A business plan draft

Once the niche has been identified, a business plan should be drawn up. It is important to include:

  • Start-up costs and possible funding sources.
  • Step-by-step development strategy.
  • Possible risks and ways to minimize them.

At the first stage, you can work from home to reduce costs. For example, a hobby (baking, embroidery, etc.) can be turned into a business without renting an office.

The key is to start with what you do best and gradually grow own business.

Виды предпринимательства

Before starting your own business, it is important to choose the appropriate entrepreneurial activity form. This depends on the area in which you plan to work: trade, education, accounting, etc.

Individual entrepreneur (IE)

One of the simplest and most popular business forms is IE (Individual Entrepreneur). In Kazakhstan, you can register an IE quickly and without visiting government agencies. It is enough to submit a notification of the start of activity through:

  • Electronic government portal (eGov.kz).
  • Mobile second-tier banks application.
  • State information system e-license.kz.

Who can open an individual entrepreneur?

  • Citizens of Kazakhstan and ethnic Kazakhs “Kandas”.
  • Citizens of the EAEU countries (Russia, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Belarus, Armenia) who permanently reside in the Republic of Kazakhstan.

An individual entrepreneur can be personal (run by one person) or joint (managed by several people).

Limited Liability Partnership (LLP)

If you plan to do business with a partner and jointly invest money, knowledge and effort, an LLP (Limited Liability Partnership) is the best option.

The main differences between a limited liability company and an individual entrepreneur:

  1. Registration with the justice authorities is required via gov.kz using an electronic digital signature.
  2. Submission of reports to statistical authorities is mandatory.
  3. A charter is required – without it you cannot open a bank account or receive government services.

LLP can engage in:

  • Provision of services.
  • Production and processing of goods.

Some activities require a license, for example:

  • Construction.
  • Sale of alcoholic beverages.

Authorized capital of LLP

To register a LLP, you need an authorized capital - this is the amount contributed by the founders. It determines their share in the company and cannot be used for current expenses (rent, raw materials, utilities, etc.). Even in a crisis, the authorized capital must remain in the LLP's account. In the event of company liquidation, this money can be used to pay off debts.

Режимы налогообложения для малого бизнеса

When registering a business, it is important to choose the appropriate tax regime. There are two main regimes in Kazakhstan:

  1. Generally established taxation procedure.
  2. Special tax regimes (STR).

Generally established tax regime

This regime is used by small businesses that calculate their income tax using the standard scheme.

  • The tax rate is 10% of net profit (income minus expenses).
  • Expenses that can be taken into account are the purchase of goods, rent, salaries, communications and other official expenses.
  • Payment deadline: once a year (before March 31 of the following year).
  • Additionally, it is mandatory to keep accounting records in the 1C program.

This mode is most often chosen by enterprises with a large turnover and the ability to document expenses.

Special tax regimes (STR)

To support small businesses, the Tax Code provides for simplified tax regimes. They are convenient because they allow for a reduction in the tax burden and simplified reporting.

Main STR types:

  1. Patent based.
  2. Using a special mobile application.
  3. A simplified declaration based.
  4. Using a fixed deduction.

Let's look at each of them in more detail.

  1. A patent based STR
  • Suitable only for individual entrepreneurs who work without hired employees.
  • Available for 32 activity types (e.g. tutoring, repair man services, photography, etc.).
  • The tax rate is 1% of the estimated income (tax is paid in advance).
  1. STR using a special mobile application
  • Suitable for individual entrepreneurs without hired employees.
  • Income for the year must not exceed 3 528 MCI.
  • Includes 33 activity types.
  • The tax rate is 1% of actual income.
  1. A simplified declaration based STR
  • For entrepreneurs with up to 30 employees.
  • Income for the year must not exceed 24 038 MCI.
  • The tax rate is 3% of total income (excluding expenses).
  • Reporting is submitted every six months.
  • It is most often used in the fields of trade, catering and services.
  1. STR using a fixed deduction
  • Allows reducing the tax base at 30% of the annual income without supporting documents.
  • A reduction of 200% of the payroll is also possible.
  • Higher limits have been established for turnover (144 184 MCI) and the number of employees (up to 50 people).
  • Suitable for wholesale and retail trade, construction and services.
  • A cash register is a must!

Regardless of the selected tax regime, when paying in cash or by card, you must use a control cash register (CCR).

Cash register options:

  • A regular cash register is a physical device.
  • Mobile cash register – an application on a smartphone.

Important: The cash register must be registered before starting to work with clients!

For a successful business, it is important to have a deep understanding of all its processes. The ideal business model is when you do what you know best, what you have experience and talent in.

If you don’t have the opportunity to assemble a team yet, you can use mobile applications, online tools and external resources – this will help automate processes and focus on the main thing..

What is outsourcing and how does it help business?

Outsourcing is the transfer of some of the company's tasks to another company that specializes in providing such services. This is a convenient solution if you cannot maintain full-time employees.

You don’t rent an office or pay salaries – you simply pay for a specific result.

You can delegate sales, marketing, accounting, logistics, and even customer support.

This saves time and resources, allowing you to focus on production or business development.

Automation of processes through digital services

Today, there are many online tools that help you run your business without spending a lot of money.

  • Chatbots in Telegram and WhatsApp – they can automatically respond to customer requests, place orders and provide advice. This reduces the number of employees and speeds up the service.
  • CRM systems – help manage your customer base, sales and orders.
  • Accounting and finance applications – automate payments, tax calculations and expense accounting.

Using outsourcing and digital tools is a smart way to run a business with minimum costs and maximum efficiency!
