July 6, Kazakhstan celebrates the state holiday – Day of capital (Astana Day), established by the Law "On amendments to the Law of the Republic of Kazakhstan "On holidays in the Republic of Kazakhstan" dated June 25, 2008 No. 47-IV.

The transfer of the capital from Almaty in the center of Kazakhstan was established by decree of the Supreme Council of the RK "On transfer of the capital of the Republic of Kazakhstan" dated July 6, 1994, No. 106-XIII (that's why 6 July is the Day of the capital). The final decision to move the capital from Almaty to Astana the President of Kazakhstan, NursultanNazarbayev, adopted in 1997 by the decree of the President dated 20 October 1997 No. 3700 from 10 December 1997 the capital of Kazakhstan was declared a city Akmola.

On 6 may 1998 by presidential decree "On renaming the city of Akmola the capital of Kazakhstan in Astana city – the capital" dated 6 may 1998, No. 3941 the capital was renamed.

On June 10, 1998, the official presentation of the new capital took place. And since the city acquired the capital status, the capital Day was celebrated on June 10. In 2006, the Day of Astana was moved to on July 6.

Recall that in March 2019, President of Kazakhstan Kassym-JomartTokayev signed a decree on renaming the capital of the Republic of Astana to Nur-Sultan.
