How to save the water and not to overpay the bill – simple tips for home and family?

Введение

Rational use of water at home helps reduce utility bills, extend the lifespan of utility systems, and reduce the load on local water supply systems and treatment plants. The water conservation measures not only save the families’ money but also contribute to preserving the country's water resources, which complies with the water legislation of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Information on the procedure for using the water supply systems and arising responsibilities are set out in the corresponding regulations.

A Simple Checklist for the Family (a checklist)

  • Check the receipts for 3 months.
  • Perform a leak test (check the meter with the taps closed).
  • Turn off the tap when brushing your teeth/washing the dishes.
  • Take a shower instead of bath.
  • Run a cloth washing machine /dishwasher when it is fully loaded.
  • Use the collected water for irrigation.
  • Mind to consider the installation/verification of meters.
  • If you suspect an error, contact a water utility company.

Basic Household Rules for Saving (Simple and Quick)

  1. A short shower instead of a bath saves tens of liters per session.
  2. Turn off the tap when brushing your teeth/shaving.
  3. Use a dishwasher/washing machine only when fully loaded.
  4. Collect the water after washing the vegetables/fruits and use it to water the plants.
  5. Install aerators (water-efficient nozzles) on your kitchen faucet and shower heads—they help reduce water consumption with no feeling of lower pressure.
  6. Don't keep the water running all the time when washing dishes - fill the tank/sink with water.

(These simple steps often reduce water use by 10-30% depending on your household habits.)

Improvements that pay off

  1. Installing hot and cold-water meters, if you do not have them, will enable to pay based on actual usage. The meters pay for themselves when the water consumption is greater than the standards.
  2. Replacing old faucets and toilets with more energy-efficient models, installing dual-flush tanks.
  3. Checking and, if necessary, calibrating the existing meters through the authorized organizations.

If, after all these measures taken, your bills remain suspiciously high, contact your local water utility to request a meter check and network inspection. The rules for using water supply systems govern the procedure for handling such requests.

Assessment of current consumption and receipts

  • Collect the last 3-6 water bills. Check the volumes on your meters (if you have them) and compare them with the previous period.
  • If you do not have the meters, check the current standard (fixed) consumption rates for your housing type (the data may be available on the eGov portal or from your local water utility).

Why it's important: This will help you understand whether there is a real increase in consumption or an error in metering/readings.

Quick Leak Check

  1. Turn off all faucets and water-using appliances in the house. Check to see if the meter indicators (if any) are moving—even with the water turned off, the meter shouldn't rotate.
  2. Check the visible areas: under the sink, near the toilet (a leaking tank), water heater, and external hoses.
  3. If you find a leak, fix it immediately (if you can't fix it yourself, call a plumber). A small drop every second adds up to tens of liters per month.

Good to know: identifying and fixing the leaks is the fastest way to reduce water consumption. The Water Code and water supply regulations set forth the responsibility for unauthorized connections and leaks (monitoring and oversight of public authorities).
