Thin ice

Thin ice

Winter promises a lot of pleasures! However, in order to avoid accidents, it is necessary to be careful on the ice, strictly follow simple but mandatory tips.

Everyone knows that with the onset of cold weather, when the columns of street thermometers fall below zero, the water in rivers, lakes and ponds begins to be covered with ice. But this ice seems solid only at first glance, in reality it is still thin, fragile and does not withstand the weight of a person. Therefore, it is dangerous to go out alone or gather in groups on the ice that has not yet become stronger. In order to be able to stay on ice without risk, its thickness, as a rule, should reach at least 10-12 cm in fresh water bodies, and even thicker on salty ones. Remember that.

You should be wary of places where the ice is covered with snow: under the snow, the ice grows much slower. Sometimes it happens that the thickness of the open ice is 10 centimeters throughout the reservoir, and only 3 cm under the snow.

In places where spring water hits, where a stream or river flows into the reservoir, as well as in places with a fast current, washouts, thawed and polynyas are formed. Here the water is covered only with thin ice. Also, the places are dangerous for fishermen and pedestrians.

It is very dangerous in unfamiliar places to roll down on the ice from the steep banks. Even if you notice an ice hole, a hole or a break in the ice ahead of you, it is difficult to slow down or turn aside.

Therefore, for skating, skiing and sledding, as well as for fishing, it is necessary to choose places with a strong ice cover.

So from non-compliance with basic safety rules:

If you have witnessed an accident on the ice, come to the rescue immediately!

When helping a victim, remember:

- do not approach the place of the break in the ice standing up, but approach crawling on your stomach with your arms and legs outstretched to the sides, otherwise you risk falling through the ice yourself.

- if you have a board, pole or hook at hand, push them in front of you and give them to the victim 3-5 meters away from the failure. As soon as the person in distress grabs the object handed to him, drag him crawling to the shore or onto strong ice.

Misfortune may happen to each of you: you may not notice an ice hole, a hole, or get on thin ice. If you find yourself in trouble, call for help immediately. The first one who hears your call will rush to your rescue.

Once in the water, try to stay calm, do not flounder, try to lean your chest on the edge of the ice with your arms thrown forward and get out on the ice yourself. After climbing on the ice, move lying down away from the dangerous place.
