Rabies is an infectious disease with a predominant lesion of the central nervous system, accompanied by convulsions, spasms of the pharyngeal and respiratory muscles.
Rabies is more common among wild animals - wolves, foxes, raccoons, badgers, bears, squirrels and others. From them, when bitten, blinded, pets and people become infected.
Among people, rabies diseases are usually spread by pets. Stray dogs and cats are particularly dangerous. Pets can become infected from each other and from wild animals.
Signs of rabies in animals are very diverse. The most characteristic are salivation, hydrophobia, aggressiveness, paralysis, but sometimes they may be absent.
The dog becomes irritable, refuses food and water, does not respond to the call, does not obey the owner. Her tail and lower jaw droop, saliva is released abundantly, there is a shakiness of gait. The animal is able to silently, without barking, pounce on oncoming people and bite them. The most dangerous is another form of rabies – silent. The main signs of the disease may be poorly expressed. It is recognized late and precautions are not taken.
Human infection can occur:
When bitten by a sick animal, when the virus enters the wound together with the saliva of the animal.
In case of saliva on the mucous membranes of the eyes, nose, mouth, damaged skin.
With all such contacts with animals , it is necessary:
Wash the wound, abrasion, scratch with plenty of running water and soap.
Treat wounds with iodine tincture.
Apply a sterile bandage.
Immediately contact a medical institution.
Measures of prevention and protection against rabies
Strictly observe the rules of keeping dogs, cats and other animals, vaccinate them against rabies every year.
Avoid contact with wild and homeless pets; explain this to children in order to avoid infection not only with rabies, but also with other dangerous diseases.
Be alert in case of unusual behavior of an animal or for no reason aggressive behavior of any pet and report this to the sanitary service.
By permission of a veterinary medical organization, an animal that has bitten people or animals is left with the owner, who has issued a written obligation to keep this animal in an isolated room for 10 calendar days and submit it for examination to a veterinarian.
In case of a bite of any animal - immediately consult a doctor.
Rabies vaccinations are still the only means to prevent this terrible disease. The course of vaccinations involves their timely implementation in accordance with the doctor's prescription and according to a certain scheme. In no case are unauthorized interruptions in vaccination, termination or reduction of the course unacceptable, otherwise vaccinations will be ineffective.
