The Ministry of Digital Development, Innovation and Aerospace Industry of the Republic of Kazakhstan plans to switch to its own national international telephone code

Instead of the telephone code +7, which is also assigned to the Russian Federation, Kazakhstan has reserved + 997 in the Telecommunications Standardization Bureau of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

At the moment, a Plan for switching to a new international telephone code on the communication networks of the Republic of Kazakhstan has been worked out with telecom operators.

"Kazakhstan will switch to its own national telephone code. It is symbolic that by the 30th anniversary of Independence, the ICRIAP has reserved a new telephone code +997 in the International Telecommunication Union. Previously, we shared the +7 code together with Russia, now when you call from our country abroad, “Kazakhstan"will be displayed. The full transition to +997 will give us the opportunity to independently distribute the national numbering resource and will allow us to expand the national system by the number of subscribers and services," said Bagdat Musin, Minister of Digital Development, Innovation and Aerospace Industry of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

At the same time, according to the ITU regulations, the issue of Kazakhstan's exit from the 7-numbering zone will be worked out with the communications administration of the Russian Federation. After the completion of this procedure, ITU Kazakhstan will be assigned the code +997.

According to the plans of the ICRIAP, Kazakhstan will switch to a new national code from January 2023. At the same time, from the moment of assignment, the new and old code can be used in parallel for 2 years. The full transition is expected from 2025.

It is worth noting that after the secession from the USSR, the international telephone code +7 was assigned to the Russian Federation and the Republic of Kazakhstan. It is used in accordance with the Agreement of June 17, 2006 "On the use of numbering of the 7-zone of world numbering" (signed on June 17, 2006 between the communications administrations of the two countries).
