Flood waters will save a drying lake in East Kazakhstan region

The natural disaster, which left many Kazakhstanis homeless, certainly became a tragedy for the entire country. To minimize damage and save populated areas that have not yet been affected, melt water is redirected to where it can be beneficial. An example of this is Lake Torangy in the Kurchum district.

In recent years, due to dry weather, the radius of Lake Torangy, located on the territory of the Kurchum rural district, has decreased by 500 meters, which has led to a reduction in the number of fauna and many species of fish. A further decrease in water levels could lead to a serious environmental disaster.

- In order to prevent spring floods and restore the lake in the Kurchum region, the 15-kilometer Zhaugashty canal in the village of Saryolen was cleaned and the culvert 4.5 kilometers long in the Kuban section was expanded. Now specialists are working to restore the water level in Lake Torangy. Additionally, the construction of a bridge for equipment has begun the akimat of the Kurchum region reported.

The work involved: a crane, a loader, two KAMAZ trucks, a crawler excavator, a 1.5-ton loader and 10 people.

“If the lake is filled with water, the potential of the fishery will increase, and will also allow other types of activities to be carried out on the reservoir,” the district administration added.

By the way, in Eastern Kazakhstan, the akimat, together with farmers, has begun work to revise crop rotation and provide moisture to crops for the spring and summer.
