Algorithm of actions in case of flood situations

The water can be both a blessing and a severe test. When rivers overflow and rains turn the streets into raging torrents, knowing how to act in such situations becomes crucial in order to survive and minimize damage.

Floods can occur for various reasons, such as meteorological factors like heavy rainfall, sudden temperature changes and prolonged downpours. Geographical features of the area, such as lowlands along rivers, also increase flood risk. Human activity plays a significant role: uncontrolled construction, deforestation and an underdeveloped sanitation system can exacerbate the situation.

With spring approaching, it is worth addressing a common question: what should you do? To provide answers, Örken East Kazakhstan Regional Scientific and Methodological Center for Informatization and Education Development of Education Administration of East Kazakhstan region, jointly with Dina A. Beksultanova, a chief expert of Emergency Prevention Administration of Emergency Situations Department of East Kazakhstan region, Lieutenant Colonel of Civil Protection, conducted an interactive webinar.

Preparation for floods must begin well in advance, because forewarned is forearmed. Start by monitoring the weather forecast to stay informed of possible threats. Assess the risks by studying past flood history in your region and identifying the most vulnerable areas. Develop a clear plan of action in case of an emergency, make sure that all family members know evacuation routs and procedures. Pack an emergency kit containing water, food, medicines, documents and a flashlight. Do not overlook training: participate in first aid and emergency response trainings.

If the flood threat has become a reality, don’t waste any time. Keep in touch with the emergency services, follow the information updates on the radio or via mobile applications. If an evacuation is announced, act quickly and follow official instructions. Avoid flooded areas, even shallow water can be dangerous. Be careful when moving around, stay away from bodies of water and avoid strong currents. Notify not only your loved ones, but also your neighbors about the impending danger. Take care of your pets, because they also need our help.

When the water starts to subside, do not rush back home. Assess the damage, document all property damage for insurance claims. Make sure the building is safe before entering. Begin to eliminate the consequences: remove water and debris, thoroughly dry the rooms and things. Explore both insurance and government support programs, but also learn about the possibility of receiving. Show compassion for others in distress, help your neighbors, because overcoming difficulties is easier together.

Floods are a serious challenge, but having a clear action plan and being prepared for any situation will help you weather the storm. Understanding the risk, developing plans, and participating in evacuation training play are pivotal in minimizing losses. Remember that protecting yourself and your family is paramount. Knowing how to act in an emergency situation can save lives and property.
