Results of online seminar “Effective methods for developing functional literacy in chemistry and biology classes”

On January 6, 2025, Örken East Kazakhstan Regional Scientific and Methodological Center for Informatization and Education Development of Education Administration of East Kazakhstan region held an online seminar titled “Effective methods for developing functional literacy in chemistry and biology classes”, in order to provide methodological assistance to teachers of chemistry and biology.

The seminar explored the use of digital technologies, online platforms and apps for data analysis, process modeling in chemistry and biology, as well as for solving interactive tasks to enhance functional literacy. It also focused on teaching skills, and methods of applying new technologies in biology and chemistry classes.   

The speakers of the seminar:

- Raushan G. Zhailaubayeva, a teacher-expert, a teacher of chemistry of Oralkhan Bokey Lyceum No. 44 of Education Department of Ust-Kamenogorsk city;

- Zhanna A. Toktarova, a teacher-moderator, a teacher of chemistry of Seitkamza Lastayev Secondary School of Education Department of Katon-Karagai district of Education Administration of East Kazakhstan region;

- Nazira A. Tyutekina, a research teacher, a teacher of biology of Akhmet Baitursynov Complex Comprehensive Secondary School-Nursery-Kindergarten No. 5 of Education Department of Shemonaikha district of Education Administration of East Kazakhstan region;    

- Akerke K. Sagatbekova, a teacher-expert, a teacher of biology of Secondary Specialized School No. 45 of Education Department of Ust-Kamenogorsk city.

In the reflective part of the seminar, the participants provided feedback, thus enabling them to update the teaching and methodological materials. The seminar also identified the challenges teachers face while implementing functional literacy in their lessons.  

35 teachers of biology and chemistry from regional secondary schools participated in the event.

Moderators of the seminar: G.M. Abysheva - Head of Methodological Department for Natural Sciences and Mathematics of Örken East Kazakhstan Regional Scientific and Methodological Center for Informatization and Education Development of Education Administration of East Kazakhstan region, and G. Bleimenova, a methodologist of the Department.
