Avalanche awareness!

Avalanche awareness!

Avalanches are among the most serious and dangerous natural hazards that can occur in mountainous areas. Understanding their causes, consequences and safety precautions is crucial for skiers, climbers and anyone in mountains.

avalanches are triggered by a combination of factors: snow accumulation on steep mountain slopes, changes in temperature and humidity, as well as the effects of winds. When the snowpack becomes too deep, snow begins to slide down leading to the formation of avalanches.

Avalanches can also be caused by human activities - loud noises, explosions or even the sound of movement, which can destabilize the snowpack.

Avalanches can have catastrophic consequences - people can be buried under tons of snow, often fatally. Avalanches can also destroy infrastructure, block roads and create serious problems for settlements in mountainous areas.

For these reasons, certain precautions are essential to prevent avalanche disasters and ensure safety in the mountains. These include assessing avalanche danger before heading out, using special equipment (shovels, probes, first-aid kits), learning the rules of safe behavior in the mountains and following the recommendations of rescue services.

This is especially important as winter approaches. To address this, Örken East Kazakhstan Regional Scientific and Methodological Center for Informatization and Education Development of Education Administration of East Kazakhstan region, jointly with N. Oteyev, a senior engineer of Emergency Situations Department of East Kazakhstan region, conducted a webinar for students of the region to outline the basic safety rules for staying in mountains with avalanche-prone areas.

Avalanches are a powerful and dangerous phenomenon, so understanding their nature and prevention is vital for mountain safety. Take precautions, keep an eye on avalanche danger forecasts and remember that your life and the lives of others depend on your judgement and knowledge of avalanche safety.

Remember that safety should be always the top priority, especially when it comes to such serious natural phenomena as avalanches.
