In today’s society, students are required not only to possess knowledge, but also to adapt to new realities, solve everyday tasks and apply the acquired skills in practice. Teachers play a vital role in preparing students for these challenges, while developing functional literacy is central for shaping students’ personality.
One of the key areas of functional literacy is mathematical literacy. It’s a person’s ability to understand the role of mathematics in the surrounding world, reason logically about mathematical topics and use mathematical knowledge to meet current and future needs.
For this reason, on December 4, 2024, an interactive lesson was held for teachers of mathematics on the topic “Enhancing mathematical literacy” at K. Bilyalov School Lyceum of Education Department of Tarbagatai district, jointly with Örken East Kazakhstan Regional Scientific and Methodological Center for Informatization and Education Development of Education Administration of East Kazakhstan region.
The key characteristics of mathematical literacy include solving real-life problems, critical thinking, communication skills and the use of new technologies. A learner should be able to present and interpret mathematical information, describe the results of their actions, explain their reasoning, and justify their conclusions.
When teaching mathematics, it is important not only to memorize the material, but also to develop students’ creative thinking and the ability to apply the acquired knowledge in non-standard situations. Since our students are future specialists, we must constantly improve and explore new ways to foster their development. As they say, “child’s happiness rests in the hands of a good teacher.”
