School-Complex No. 3 of Semey city implements the project “Reading school-reading nation”
The book is an invaluable wealth of humanity. It is a source of science, an educational tool leading to the highest level of education and culture. Poet Navoi wrote: “A book is a golden treasure that does not require payment for its wisdom”, and the Great Abai: “The beauty of knowledge is in the book, do not get tired of reading books in order to comprehend them.”
Such beautiful words are again proving that reading books is crucial for human development. The Government drew its attention to the fact that recently people read fewer and at the same time lose a source for spiritual development. President K. Tokayev noted: “Reading is a source of spiritual maturity. Today in the age of information it is updating every second. We must spend our golden time on useful things,” and suggested a list of 30 books that every citizen of Kazakhstan should read.
Currently, important programs are being developed in this direction. Only by reading books can a person comprehend all the knowledge accumulated by mankind. The book can be called a thesaurus of science, wisdom and human reason. How to introduce a child to the world of books?
Implementing the social and pedagogical project “Successful Reading”
In our school, this issue has been addressed since 2015 within the framework of the social and pedagogical project “Successful Reading”. School teachers, class teachers and librarians worked according to the project plan. Project participants shared their experience at the city, regional, republican and international levels, posted in the media. They shared the outcomes of their work at the regional round of the republican competition of pedagogical readings, at the regional workshop of librarians, at the August meeting of city teachers. School children won top places in various competitions in this direction. The work was organized at platforms of a new format: “Collective reading”, TEDx, REDx conferences were held before each meeting at our school among students of city schools, among teachers of partner schools. It has become a tradition to conduct an intellectual game “Clever persons” among students of city schools. There is an active Bookcrossing bookshelf in the school corridor.
In the 2020-2021 school year, the Successful Reading Project will be complemented in an expanded format and implemented as part of the project
“Reading school”
In general, this project is aimed at covering the entire school team and is focused on a positive outcome. According to the research carried out this school year: 35% of schoolchildren showed poor reading skills, unable to independently work with various information. Furthermore, the next identified problem is low motivation to reading books. Library attendance by schoolchildren is 50%, teacher attendance is 58%, parental reading rate is 30%. The next problem is the books of the library fund don’t meet modern requirements. The share of textbooks for the curriculum - 67%, fiction books - 18%, old literature books - 60%, books by the age of children - 2%, works of modern writers - 2%, scientific literature - 2%, technical books - 0.6%, books in the Kazakh language - 3%. Based on analytical data, a long-term plan, an annual action plan has been developed.
The direction to improve the reading rate
Monitoring of “speed tablets”, “dictionary tablets” is underway. It’s one of the effective methods to form the reading literacy of schoolchildren and increase their interest in reading.
“Collective reading” of teachers “One world, one book”
Each meeting gives time for “collective reading”, a project is being implemented on the theme “One world, one book.” The books recommended for reading are listed in the instructional-methodological letter of 2020-2021. Comments on the books read are sent to the WhatsApp group.
Guidelines and manuals development
A creative group of teachers is working on the book “Pedagogical box” to collect methods and techniques for the development of reading literacy of schoolchildren.
Integrated lessons development
To combine reading with knowledge, teachers of the creative group prepare integrated lessons “Read – Explore”, “Read – Draw”, “Read – Formulate”, “Read – Perform”.
Author's program “Reading Culture”
The author's program of school teacher M.Z. Zhanaspayeva “Reading Culture” was awarded a Diploma at the republican competition of author's programs and is currently sent for consideration to the expert council under Ybyrai Altynsarin Academy.
Developing leaflets to heighten schoolchildren’s interest
Leaflets to heighten schoolchildren’s interest are developed and sent to parent chats.
Building electronic literature
In accordance with the specifics of learners, the lists of books are created, electronic versions are prepared to ensure their availability. A reading club has been created with a view to attracting schoolchildren to reading.
20-Minute Learning Project “Let’s read, guys!"
A 20-minute learning project “Kel, balalar, okylyk” was launched for primary school children with a view to attracting schoolchildren to reading of artistic works.
Reading School Instagram page
A school Instagram page was created in order to popularize the Reading School Project and exchange opinions. This page will continuously post the work carried out within the framework of the project.
Flashmob “Read before going to bed!”
A competition “Reading before going to bed!" was held among children of grades 1-4, with the support of their parents. Children and parents were actively involved.
School of those interested in reading
A school Instagram park was set up in order to popularize the project of “School of those interested in reading” and exchange views. All efforts carried out within the framework of the project will be posted on this page.
Organizing Family Reading
Family reading is of particular attention. Within the framework of the project, a marathon of parents’ meetings was launched on the topic “Reading parent-reading child”, “Parent Reading”, “Family Reading”.
Tales of Thursday
The event “Tales of Thursday” is held as one of the ways to attract primary school children to reading books. The goal of this event is to educate a child through a fairy tale. Chief family members to implement this event are grandparents.
It's great to read books with dad!
The key goal is to strengthen the relationship between the father and the child, to attract to the joint reading of books, to attract the attention of the father to the upbringing of children.
Project reading
A project competition “Reading. Studying. Analyzing” is planned to hold among students of grades 1-11 in mid-April.
Student achievements
Many of our readers won top places in the city competition for reading Abai's poems by heart, reading excerpts from the Edification Words, preparing creative videos, and essay contests.
Library work
Librarian Lesson, Read and leave it to another! - bookcrossing platform is underway. Children, teachers, parents give the read books to this platform, receive the necessary books, exchange books.
Modern equipment of the library. Attracting sponsors.
Funds in the amount of KZT5 million was allocated to repair the school library equipping the modern library and replenishing the fund of literary books. 60 books were presented during the action “Give a book to the library” with the support of school graduates, sponsors, parents. Also, the teams of Halyk Bank JSC, Silicate LLP continuously provide support.
The National Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Library of the First President
Within the framework of the Reading School Project, the National Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Library of the First President presented 100 copies of new books to the library to replenish the library fund.
The book has always been the spiritual treasure of humanity. Only through reading the book can we predict and pave the ideal path to our future! The fact that the Successful Reading Program implemented by the school staff corresponds to the idea of the Reading School - Reading Nation Program, which is becoming relevant today, suggests that we are on the right path.
