Ways to develop schoolchildren’s reading literacy

On December 10, 2025, Örken East Kazakhstan Regional Scientific and Methodological Center for Informatization and Education Development of Education Administration of East Kazakhstan region held a Zoom meeting to deliver a master class.

The speaker was Zhanna T. Kitapbayeva.

The topic of the master class was “Ways to develop schoolchildren’s reading literacy.”

During the meeting, Zhanna T. Kitapbayeva thoroughly presented modern approaches to the formation and development of reading literacy within the framework of the updated educational content and in light of the outcomes of the PISA international study.

The key focus areas of the master class:

• The methodology of using literary texts as a powerful tool for developing proficient reading and creative writing skills.
• Principles of developing tasks that target higher-order thinking skills (analysis, evaluation, creation).
• Methodological approaches to working with multimodal texts (combining verbal, visual, audio, and digital components). Techniques were demonstrated that enable students to “read” not only words, but also images, infographics, video and audio materials.
• A workshop on creating original tasks that foster students’ creative and critical thinking.

The participants emphasized the high value of the master class. Such events demonstrate that East Kazakhstan region continues to work systematically to improve schoolchildren’s reading literacy, while teachers of the region are ready to adopt modern and effective methods.
