The district was founded in 1791, the territory of the district is 10.5 thousand km2. The district is located in the North-East of East Kazakhstan region in the North-East and East it borders with the territory of the Russian Federation (Altai Krai), in the North and North-West of the city of Ridder, on the South-East of the Katon – Karagai and Kokpekty areas in the southwest with Lancers and Glubokovsky area. The administrative-territorial structure of the district includes 2 cities, 13 townships and rural districts, where 4 villages and 45 rural localities are concentrated. The population of the district as of 01.12.2020 is 63.9 thousand people. The basic industries of the district are industry and agriculture.
