The situation on the labor market in 2021

In 2021, 8.8 million people were employed in various sectors of the economy of Kazakhstan, of which 6.7 million people were employed (76.1% of the total number of people employed in the economy), 2.1 million worked on the basis of self-employment people (23.9% of the total number of people employed in the economy).

Compared to 2020, total employment increased by 75.1 thousand people, including at the expense of employees - by 23.5 thousand people, self-employed - by 51.5 thousand people.

Of the number of employees, 342.7 thousand people were employed in temporary and piecework work, 27.5 thousand people had seasonal work, 7.5 thousand people had casual work, were engaged in the production of products in personal subsidiary plots for sale (exchange) - 437.6 thousand people.

274.6 thousand people worked according to a reduced schedule (reduction in the volume of work, the employer's initiative, flexible hours and other reasons). Due to the suspension of activities, 10.2 thousand people were temporarily out of work.

The number of unemployed amounted to 449.6 thousand people. The unemployment rate is 4.9%. The number of people who were unemployed but were not looking for a job or were not ready to start working (potential labor force) amounted to 60.9 thousand people.

The unemployment rate among youth aged 15 to 28^*was 3.8%, the share of NEET youth (according to ILO methodology) was 6.9%.

Officially at the end 2021 97.9 thousand unemployed were registered in the employment agencies of the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection of the Population of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The share of registered unemployed was 1.1% of the labor force (in 2020 - 1.5%).

Methodical explanation

Employed population - all persons who, for a short period of one week, belonged to the following categories: "employed (paid) worker" or "self-employed worker".

The unemployed (according to ILO standards) are persons who did not have a profitable occupation (job), were actively looking for it and were ready to start it.

NEET youth are the part of the youth who are not working, not engaged in education or vocational training.
