Demographic situation for January-September 2021

The population of the country as of October 1, 2021 amounted to 19062.6 thousand people, including urban – 11303.6 thousand people (59.3%), rural – 7759.0 thousand people (40.7%). Compared to October 1, 2020 the population increased by 253,4 thousand people or 1.3%.

Natural increase

Natural population increase of the republic in January-September 2021 compared to January-September 2020 (189.3 thousand people) increased by 6.3% and amounted to 201.2 thousand people. Natural population increase rate amounted to 14.16 people per 1000 population.

As a result of processing the information contained in the СIVIL status provided by civil register offices, in January-September 2021 the number of births amounted to 338.8 thousand people, which is 7.9% more than in January- September 2020 (313.9 thousand people). Crude birth rate amounted to 23.84 births per 1000 population.

In the period under review the number of deaths amounted to 137.6 thousand people, which is 10.4% more than in January-September 2020 (124.7 thousand people). Crude death rate amounted to 9.68 deaths per 1000 population.

In January-September 2021, 2682 infant deaths under one year of age were registered in the republic. Compared to January-September 2020 (2448 infant deaths) increased by 9.6%. Infant mortality rate amounted to 7.92 per 1000 live births.

Population migration

As a result of processing the information provided by migration authorities, in January-September 2021, 7246 immigrants were registered in the country, number of emigrants amounted to 25322 people, net-migration -18076 people.

The main migration exchange of the country takes place with the CIS countries. The share of immigrants and emigrants to and from CIS countries amounted to 84.2% and 86.0% of the total number of migrants.

The number of internal migrants increased by 0.2% compared to January- September 2020. In terms of interregional migration, a positive net-migration was formed in 4 regions of the country: Almaty (22346 people), Nur-Sultan (21718 people) Shymkent (9568 people) cities and Mangystay oblast (248 people).
