Today, at a working meeting chaired by the Akim of the North Kazakhstan region Gauez Nurmukhambetov, issues related to preparation for the flood period were discussed. Reports were heard from the heads of the Department of Emergency Situations, Kazhydromet and district akims via intercom.
"The flood issue is very serious for the region. It is important to prevent a repeat of last year's scenario, when a strong flood led to significant consequences. Preparations are ongoing: repair and engineering work has not stopped for a single day, and continues even in winter," the akim of the region said.
As part of the engineering work plan, which includes 109 events, the following work has already been carried out:
✅ 8 protective dams have been strengthened
✅ 80 km of dams and embankments have been erected and strengthened in the region
✅ 108 culverts and tubing have been installed on highways
✅ 10 km of drainage ditches and canals have been deepened
✅ 4 km of small river beds have been cleared
✅ 214 km of storm drains have been cleaned and repaired
✅ Reconstruction of the first lift pumping station is nearing completion
Additional measures are being implemented given the specifics of last year's flood:
🔹 Construction of a bypass canal has begun near the Petropavl hydroelectric complex to prevent water damming on the Yesil River. This will allow flood waters to be discharged in advance and prevent flooding of the regional center's microdistricts.
🔹 The banks are being cleaned and a canal is being built in the riverbed near the villages of Sokolovka and Bolshaya Malyshka.
🔹 Preventive blasting operations will be carried out on 49 sections of the Yesil River and small rivers in Petropavl and 8 districts to prevent ice jams and ensure the unimpeded passage of melt water.
"Now is a critical period for the entire region. Government agencies have been transferred to an enhanced operating mode. It is necessary to carefully carry out preparatory work, especially on the procurement of inert materials, sacks and equipment. It is also important to take into account the opinions and recommendations of local residents," the head of the region emphasized.
In the near future, sectional meetings will be held in the districts, where tasks and priority work will be specified.
