NIT participants once again visited the colony in Nur-Sultan

Since 2013, the National Preventive Mechanism for the Prevention of torture (NIT) has been functioning in Kazakhstan to fulfill international obligations.
The activities of the NIT are coordinated by the Commissioner for Human Rights and are supported by the government, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and other international organizations. Members of the NIT include members of Public Associations selected among citizens engaged in activities to protect the rights of citizens, as well as lawyers, social workers, and doctors.
The purpose of the NIT is to conduct an independent preliminary expert examination of institutions and organizations.
Thus, the participants of the NIT visited the EC-166/10 institution of the DUIs. The purpose of the visit was to monitor the administration of the institution in terms of identifying torture and other forms of cruel, degrading treatment of persons held in the settlement colony.
During the event, participants of the NIT visited the residential premises of convicts, the canteen, the bath and laundry complex, as well as the quarantine department.
In addition, NIT participants organized a reception for convicts. As for the conditions of detention, no complaints or comments were received based on the results of the reception.
-In the institutions of the capital, such events are held on a regular basis, which in turn shows transparency and legality in the institutions, – said Daulet Rakhimbekov, head of the Department of the Penal correction system in Nur-Sultan.
Also, according to the head of the settlement colony Nurgali Azhikhanov, such expert visits are aimed at constant monitoring of the principles of the rule of law and the protection of human rights in closed institutions, as they are one of the fundamental foundations of Civil Liberties.
