Participants of the National Preventive Mechanism (NIT) Kosyuk N. B. and Zhuk E. Yu.visited the UK-161/3 institution of the Department of UIs of Kostanay region, where convicts sentenced to life imprisonment are held.
The NIT service is engaged in the Prevention of torture and other forms of cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment of persons serving sentences.
The administration of the institution introduced representatives to the household and material conditions of detention of convicts. Detention cells, walking areas and other premises were inspected. No complaints or appeals were received from the convicts.
The UK-161/3 institution in the city of zhitikara, or popularly called "Black Eagle", is the only colony in Kazakhstan where convicts serve life sentences. A total of 360 people will be detained, including 160 people sentenced to life imprisonment.
