New technologies are being introduced in the women's colony of East Kazakhstan region

In accordance with the developed project between the CUIS of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan and Zona+telecom LLP, with the expert support of the regional representative office of Penal Reform International in Central Asia, a system of prompt delivery of PIN codes for communication via payphones has been installed in the institution OV-156/21 of the Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan in accordance with Article 109 of the PEC of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
- The main goal of this project is to reduce the costs incurred during the delivery of payphone cards, the introduction of a new method of paying for payphone calls of convicts, as well as digitalization of the penitentiary system and provision of telephone conversations with persons in places of deprivation of liberty. The use of modern information and telecommunication technologies will improve the living conditions of convicts, preserve and enhance their socially useful connections," explained the head of the institution Zhaksylyk Altaev.
- As we were explained, this system greatly simplifies our calls to the house, that is, now that our relatives have paid a certain amount for calls online, we can take a receipt with a PIN code from here and, before calling, dial this PIN code, then dial the relative's number and we have the opportunity to talk to them. And before, in order to get payphone cards, you had to wait for a letter or parcel to be received from home. We feel for ourselves that the penal system is being digitalized. We already have terminals for electronic appeals, courts are held via videoconference, legal assistance is also provided online and we communicate with relatives via video. Yes, I want to thank our government and the management of the institution for such convenient opportunities–" said the convict Evgenia.
